Thirty years ago, if I told you that the primary means of communicating and disseminating information would be a series of interconnected computer networks you would of thought I was watching Star Trek or reading a science fiction novel. In 2010, the future of mass media is upon us today; the Internet. The Internet is and will only grow in the future as the primary means of delivering news, information and entertainment to the vast majority of Americans. Mass media as we know it today will take new shape and form in the next few years with the convergence and migration of three legacy mediums (Television, Radio, Newspaper) into one that is based on the Internet and will replace these mediums forever changing the face of journalism, media and politics. In this paper I will attempt to explain the transition of print media to one of the internet, how the shift to an internet based media environment will impact journalism and mass media, and how this migration will benefit society and forever change the dynamic of news and politics.
Changes in Journalism
The Internet’s influence on our lives has spread throughout. According a 2009 US Census survey 74% of Americans use the internet and have access within their household.A number that has increased every year since 1990 and will sure grow in the future. In this survey they relieved that they did various activities on the internet including social media, (Facebook and Twitter) researching and reading news articles, watching YouTube videos, shopping and so much more all can be done with a computer or Internet enabled phone. Conclusion
Although the future of newspapers and print media is very gloomy right now I think that once the newspapers that were revered and respected in their heyday develop a model that can incorporate and transition traditional news along with current web and online media at a reasonable rate and with the high quality that we have been known to expect I think that newspapers will make a surprising comeback and will be once again at the head to the public sphere and will be viable and thriving online entities.
When discussing the media, we must search back to its primal state the News Paper. For it was the News paper and its writers that forged ahead and allowed freedoms for today’s journalism on all fronts, from the Twitter accounts to the daily gazettes all must mark a single event in the evolution of media in respects to politics and all things shaping. Moving on in media history, we began to see a rapid expansion around 1990. With more than 50% of all American homes having cable TV access, newspapers in every city and town with major newspaper centers reaching far more than ever before. Then the introduction of the Internet; nothing would ever be the same.

The world we live in is one of innovation and growth. Technology has expanded and grown significantly over the past several decades. At the forefront of this evolution is the media. Over the past several hundred years, the media has seen substantial growth. While print media has been a staple of society for many decades, the internet and other forms of media have revolutionized the way we receive information.
“The News about the News: American Journalism in Peril” by Leonard Downie Jr. and Robert G. Kaiser is the forefather to Kovack’s “The Elements of Journalism.” More than 10 years before Kovach penned his expectations for journalists and the public, Downie and Kaiser, veteran journalists at the Washington Post, touch on each of Kovach’s key tenants of journalism, as evidenced by their three main goals: “to explain why good journalism is so important, to increase the knowledge of consumers of news about how the news business works and to encourage public support for the best journalism” (p. 12). Their discussions of infotainment, accountability journalism, transparency, objectivity, changing business models, news values and “genuine interactivity” with readers via the Internet, make the similarities clear. Many sentences from “The News about the News” could be from either book. For example, “When profits, and thus ratings, matter most, the temptation to woo bigger audiences with crime, violence, disasters and celebrities is overwhelming,” and “Of the many unknowable facts about the future, perhaps one is most critical: what consumers will want and expect from the Internet five, ten or twenty years from now,” which both touch on major themes in the two pieces (pgs. 177, 216).
“Out of Print” written by Eric Alterman is a very informative article. It relates to me in a major way considering that I’ve been interested in journalism all of my life. I get my daily news from CNN, the thought of reading a newspaper never crossed my mind.There has been a major decline in newspapers due to technology’s rapid advancement. Is this a good shift in our society? How long will print journalism be used? Many scholars believe that newspapers will not be around much longer. We must adapt with the technological changes in our society. Many also believe that newspapers will always be relevant. I believe that newspapers have no worth in today’s society. Why do we need them? We can simply access the news via cell-phone or computer. “Independent, publicly traded American newspapers have lost forty-two per cent of their market value in the past three years, according to the media entrepreneur Alan Mutter.”
...Newspapers are not just information, but reliable, source worthy information. They have allowed us to speak our minds opening over the years, and without showing interest to keep our newspapers alive, we will soon lose them altogether.
The revolution between traditional media platform to online and mobile media sources have change greatly throughout the past decades. With the time it takes for news to present its’ information quickly, online media provides the ability to access information and news ahead of traditional media. Especially with technology, receiving information can just be an arm’s length away by your smart phones or other electronic devices. In trying to attract new audiences, news media have begun to transition from reporting to becoming a form of entertainment. With the meteoric rise of social media’s role as a news source, the fight for an increase of diversity in the media, and the ever-growing desire of immediate content, the future of responsible journalism is more important than ever. Ask yourself, why do I think the way I do? Where do my political views originate? How do I prove them? Most likely, it is due to the biased portrayal of issues in the media and the politicization that accompanies what we consume. Now, compare your views to your preferred news reporting entity. More than likely, they are the same.
Newspapers have been around since the early 18th century, gaining prominence after 1790 during the colonial era. Magazines followed right behind newspapers and gained popularity as well, television followed last, booming in popularity in the 1960’s. Television is still the most often used source for news and other information, such as the weather. But new forms of mass media are on the rise, such as channels, blogs and podcasts, which have been around since the early 2000’s but are now picking up momentum and gaining prominence as a news source. There are similarities as well as differences between the old media and the new media, and while the new media is more modern and accessible it does not have to push old media out of the picture, the two can be combined for the benefit of the consumers and the company, providing reliable information at a faster speed.
Days, months, and years go by and we do not notice them. Living in such a busy world, we are not always aware of the changes in our lives. Twenty years ago, if someone was told we would be able to buy groceries, pay our bills, buy stocks or even a car through the use of a computer, we might have laughed and blamed too much science fiction television for such wild accusations. However, as the next generation of children grows up, they may find it funny that people still send letters to each other through the post office. The development of the Internet has given us the ability to communicate and exchange information instantly across vast distances. The Internet has caused a huge impact in the communication field, and has made our way of living and working a lot easier, faster, and cheaper than before.
The media is sometimes called the “Fourth Estate” because of its influence in shaping the course of politics and public opinion. Some people are influenced by what they read or hear and others are not. There is a well-known psychological process called selective attention. Wilson, Dilulio, and Bose define it as “paying attention only to those news stories with which one already agrees.” (290)
The Center for the Digital Future’s 2005 report found that 'among users 17 and older, 56.3 percent consider the Internet to be a very important or extremely important source of information for them' (p. 4). Online resource capabilities save an individual time as well as provide ease of access and availability to a broad scope of materials. Print books and journals, though they provide in–depth information on a particular subject, are not easily accessible and available at any particular moment. In order to access many books, an individual must either visit the local library or contain the book in his or her own private collection, which could be costly. Online resources can be accessed anytime at anyplace. “Overall, there is expanded access to information in a variety of formats from worldwide institutions, businesses, and universities" (Darrow & MacDonald, 2004, p. 22).
