Validity & Triangulation

According to Shadish, Cook and Campbell (2002), there are four primary types of validity that researchers should address to ensure validity is met. The first form is constructed validity. This refers to the degree in which inferences that are made about the nature and displays of theoretical factors. The second form is statistical conclusion validity. This is the use of appropriate and used statistics to determine what the research is perceiving. Internal validity is the third form of validity. This is the validity of inferred and found information about the relationships between the elements of the chosen research design and outcomes. The final form of validity is external validity, this form of validity is used to …show more content…

The reason why is that the research will be employing a qualitative data paradigm. This means that the latter definition suits the research better. However, to make sure that the data collected is valid throughout the entire research the four primary types of validity will be considered. Another way in which the data gathered will stay valid is by using triangulation on the responses to the questions asked.

Denzin (1978) cited in McMurray, Scott and Pace (2008) suggested that there are four types of triangulation. The first type is source triangulation, this is when there are a variety of data sources that are used. The second form is investigator triangulation, this is where more than one researcher are used. Theory triangulation is the third form, and this is when more than one perspective would be used to interpret the data. The final form is methodology triangulation, this is when several different data gathering techniques will be
