The first stop on our tour is one of the oldest cities in the world is Athens, Greece. Athens is often referred to as the "cradle of civilization" because it was the birthplace of democracy, political science, literature, and theater, to name a few. Athens was known as the land of Gods. According to ancient Greek legend, this very city was the battleground where Athena fought with Poseidon. Athena won the battle, and the city was named after her. However, Poseidon had his revenge by making the area waterless. This tale is one of many ancient Greek myths, but water shortages plague the city to this very day ("Acropolis, Athens, Greece • 360° Aerial Panoramas", 2016). “In Athens, there is an ancient Greek temple, The Erechtheion, that was constructed on the Acropolis of Athens between 421 and 406 BCE in the Golden Age of the city to house the ancient wooden cult statue of Athena and glorify the great city at the height of its power and influence. The Erechtheion has suffered a troubled history of misuse and neglect, but with its prominent position above the city and porch of six Caryatids, it remains one of the most distinctive buildings from antiquity” (Cartwright, 2012, para. ).
