In the story. The Flying Machine by Ray Bradbury, the qualities I would describe the emperor are fearful, artistic, and a naturalist. First of all, the emperor was fearful. According to the text the emperor explains, “Who is it to say that someday just such a man, in just an apparatus of paper and reed, might not fly in the sky and drop huge stones upon the Great Wall of China?”(310). This shows that Emperor fears and that someone will have a flying machine and attempt to destroy the Great Wall. It is his responsibility to not only protect his people, but also the Great Wall. A possible theme of the story is with great commitment comes sacrifice. First of all, the flier had to sacrifice his own life because of his invention. “Off with his head’ said the emperor. The executioner whirled his silver ax. “‘Burn the kite and the inventors body!’
Said the emperor” (310). The emperor told the executioner to chop the inventor's head and burn the kite and the inventors body. Second of all had to kill the flying man because he feared someone. “‘Some other man who, seeing you, will build a thing of bright papers and bamboo like this. But the other man will have an evil face and an evil heart’” (310). The emperor fears that someone will make a flying machine just like how the inventor and he is committed to protect his empire from evil forces. Lastly the servant is committed to listen to all the commands of the empire. According to the text “The servants retreated to obey. The emperor turned to his servant who had seen the man flying. ‘ Hold your tongue. It was all a dream, a most sorrowful and a beautiful dream and the farmer in the distant field who also saw, tell him it would pay him to consider it only a vision. If ever the word passes around, you and the farmer die within the hour’” (310).
