Social media has been a big part of our lives since the internet started gaining power in the last years. The thirst for communication has always been part of the necessity, and it is of pivotal importance that we center our attention to the social media and to its consequences. For that reason and many more, I am quite interested about searching through various sources (articles and acquaintances) with the intention to go deeper into the technology and its advantages or even destructive effects in the students’ lives. When it comes to education, the internet is been, by far, one of the most valuable tools there is for research, communication and interaction. Thus, it would be wrong to deny its positive influences in a student’s life due to its powerful sources that makes the student’s life way easier. On the other hand, there are people who believe that because of the social media’s informality and colloquial environment, it destroys the kid’s …show more content…
Since social media has taken a significant large part of our lives, it is inevitable that we are going to continue using it. For that reason itself, the most common concern a teacher has regarding his or her students is what impact social media will have on their lives. Nonetheless, it does not precisely mean that this impact is going to be harmful. On the contrary, it can be quite useful. The bottom line is that the students need to start seeing Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and other social Medias as an opportunity to share their writing with a purpose. The point is to make them see their “Timelines” as a real piece of writing, which in reality, is. Therefore, it depends to each single student to give the proper importance to what they write, making of social media the most relevant way of
I will be able to use this in my final research paper by providing facts of the effects of social media on teenagers. In this website, it gives multiple examples of what can happen online to anyone. By using this article, I will be able to prove how much social media can hurt a person's life and the consequences that can happen if used incorrectly.
By generating innovative ways students can interact with their family and peers via different networks, social media has gained incredible popularity amongst students of all grade-levels. While students have come to embrace these alternative methods of communication with great delight, teachers have not welcomed these social networks as warmly. From a teacher’s perspective, social media plays the role of the ultimate student distraction. The distraction has played out from sidetracking students away from homework outside of the classroom, to averting their attention to their gadgets in the classroom. In “Social Media Can Be Your Ally” by Nicholas Provenzano, he reasons that social media is not a teacher’s enemy.
Social Media may be helpful sometimes, but they do bring many disadvantages and dangers to those who use them. To begin, “Teenage Social Media Butterflies May Not Be Such a Bad Idea” by Melissa Healy, talks about social medias advantages and parental worries. Many people like parents may say Social Medias are helpful or they are a bad influence for our new generation. Some advantages said in
Some believe that ‘Social networking sites help students do better at school. 59% of students with access to the Internet report that they use social networking sites to discuss educational topics and 50% use the sites to talk about school assignments” (Procon) However, “If the students checked Facebook just once during the 15-minute study period, they had a lower grade-point average”. (Clemmitt) This shows that social media is the main source of distraction which does not allow individuals to focus on their academic work. This is harmful to society because individuals will not be able to completely focus on a task. Thus individuals would complete their tasks with little thought on how they are doing it. Procon has also mention that “People who use social media have a lower grade point average (3.02) social media than people who don't use social media. (3.82) they also tend to get lower test grades”. This shows that the impact social media had on students’ academic career is negative. With a low grade point average students feel no need to push themselves which leads to low self-motivation. Even though some may argue that Social Media has led to educational opportunities, others may argue that it is has done more damage to academics
Social media and internet use have considerable impact on the lives of children and young people. Outline both the positive and negative aspects of this.
Going with this concept, the author continues and says “After we teach the teachers, the sensible thing is to educate the students in digital citizenship—not just by trying to put the fear of God in them about bullying or sexting—but to discuss the positives and negatives of the whole evolving landscape” (Rutledge). This shows how social media etiquette with students and teachers is crucial. Additionally, this is perhaps the best solution for keeping Facebook friendship ethics at bay because there are clear positives and clear negatives regarding the whole issue, therefore digital citizenship literacy and intercommunications of students and teachers is not a black or white issue. Personally, I have sought the use of some means of social media for academic purposes. In the early college we use a learning management system called Schoology in which posts, updates, and messages are put to use to keep students, staff, and teachers caught up on latest school events. It’s also used to keep in touch with teachers for assignment due dates and Q and
In the last 50 years the internet’s influence has grown exponentially with the advance of technology. In communications revolutions, first there was the telegraph, then the radio, the newspaper, magazines, television and now the internet. We live in a society that depends on information and communication to keep moving in the right direction and do our daily activities like work, health care, education, personal relationships, and anything else that we have to do. What we need to be aware is that most of our decisions, beliefs and values are based on what we know for a fact; our assumptions and our own experience. In our work we usually know what we have to do based on our experience and studies, however in our daily lives we rely on the media to get the current news and facts about what is important and what we should be aware of. What effect does the social media have on people? Is the social media bringing convenience to people? Nowadays, social media and technology have become a necessary part of almost any field. There are not many activities that are not affected by it. It affects health, education, communication and so on. All they show us that importance and threats of social media, we need to treat it properly. (maybe end the thesis with this instead - “Despite the positive effects of internet technology however, there are dangers if we don’t use it properly and productively.”)
Purpose of Study Individuals should understand that the use or nonuse of social media has negative and positive effects on their lives, whether they recognize them or not. Students who excessively use social networking applications can be negatively affected because they are spending too much time on these applications rather than paying attention in class, completing homework, studying, sleeping, or focusing on their own health and condition. However, these same students who are excessive users are often times the students who are more aware of global issues and updates in pop culture through the use of social media. Students who moderately use social networking applications spend a good amount of time on these applications and are still able to manage time for sleeping, practicing good eating habits, homework, and studying. These students are usually just as aware, or slightly less aware, than students who excessively use social networking.
As technology increases and develops in this century, the use of social media increases as well. Schools have begun adapting it, using it as their tool to inform students of any school related news. However, using it as a tool for learning is a different story. By using it as a tool, it can push you off your course with classes. Social media is something that is not needed at school grounds. Schools should not require social media use in classes.
Communication plays an important role and becomes an essential part in our daily lives. Today we have taken communication to new level as social media and social networking. They have had a tremendous impacts on the word, on our culture and in business as well. Social media websites are some of the most popular on the internet, such as Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, etc. They are the places where people can interact with others easily and expose themselves to strangers. Our generation and the younger ones have more opportunities to grow up with the new development of technology that will shape the way they live of communicating and sharing ideas. The social media causes some problems that lead to less social interaction and negatively affect students academic, but it also brings benefit to people that creates new social connections to bring people from all over the world to be closer.
Social media like Facebook, Instagram, twitter, and snapchat can become a distraction for people. In schools, teenagers find their way around to post online. They don’t realize what essential material they could be learning; all they care about is posting about how they feel. I can understand why so many people especially teenagers want to use social media, but they are losing time. Time is precious and if they are in school and wasting their time on social media, then they won’t be learning anything. In the article, “Are Social Networking Sites Good for Our Society”, the author talks about how teenagers are throwing away their education ever
Social Media has become a very essential tool in the society; in addition, it has a huge impact on communication and learning process. Social media is defined as websites and applications used for social networking. “As of September 2013, seventy-one percent of online adult use Facebook, eighteen percent use Twitter and seventeen percent use Instagram, twenty-two percent use PInterest, and another twenty-two percent use LinkedIn. (PewReasearch, 2013). In addition, "Between February 2005 and August 2006, the use of social networking sites among young adult internet user ages eighteen and twenty-nine jumped from nine percent to forty-nine percent. The usage of social media had grown drastically.” On social media sites like these, users may develop biographical profiles, communicate with friends and strangers, do research, and share thoughts, photos, music, links, and more” (Socialnetworking.procon,2012). Social media has impacted everyone in several different ways. In this present time, majority of college student use Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Social media has a bold impact college student's grades, social interactions, and the teaching and learning process.
Over the past decade, there has been a considerable debate about the effect of social media on individuals and societies. In fact, social media has become inseparable part of our life. It is not a new thing and has various forms. It emerged in the late seventies and the early eighties with the emergence of USENET, Bulletin Board System, AOL. In around 1994, private internet service providers came with new technology revolution in the major cities of the USA. This gave a golden chance to the millions of people to come online and gave them the access to the internet. This era was the dawn of the social media. This gave birth to various online social sites like classmate.com, P2P, Napster, Sixdegree, Friendster, Myspace, LinkendIn, etc. There
The popularity of social media is rapidly increasing in the last few decades. This may be due to the students of colleges and universities as well as youth is widely used for global access. Social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook have become a craze for everyone nowadays. In these cases, some students are more concerned about social media or social networks than on teaching by lecturers and will cause affected their academic performance.
The social media is one of the most common means of communication and pretty much of knowing anything and everything around the world these days, and it is growing very rapidly. It changes and affects each person in a different way, or ways. Some may argue that social media has a bad influence on children and young adults, while most people see that the social media has a more positive effect on them than a negative one. Social media is basically the new way of keeping in touch with everything and everyone, and of even strengthening bonds between each other. This essay will argue that social media has improved communication between people, and has also improved the means of communication between them.
