Emotions“represent complex psychological and physiological states that, to a greater or lesser degree, index occurrences of value” (Dolan, 2002). Therefore it is not surprising to say emotion influences human cognition, but how does emotion impacts cognitive processing is not very clear. Historically most psychologists viewed cognition and emotions as two separate fields. Nevertheless, in past two decades a growing body of evidence showed cognition and emotion are very closely interdependent. Psycholinguists are studying effects of emotion on word processing and word recognition; both are known to be cognitive demands. Experiments conducted in this area are usually involving emotional valence, which specifies whether stimulus is positive or negative, and emotional arousal, which defines the emotional intensity that has linked with the stimulus which can be associated to physiological activation (Briesemeister , Kuchinke & Jacobs , …show more content…
One alternative model example is the discrete emotion theory. This theory suggests emotions are discretely categorised and further differentiated in at least five discrete categories- happiness, sadness, anger, fear, and disgust- that are identifiable by facial and vocal expressions across all human cultures (Hewig et al., 2005), these expressions are believed to be innate. This theory controls stimuli for emotional valence and arousal levels. However, It is not plausible to provide some evolutionary explanation for this model. Nonetheless, contextual learning has been linking stimulus material to discrete emotions. Memory is defined as “the faculty by which the mind stores and remembers information” (“Tmesis”, n.d.). Memory is purely mental. Everyone has memories, either pleasant or unpleasant, but they are still there. They are an essential part of who we are and without them, we would struggle to establish our identity. Memory is not only images of the past, but emotions too. They are the main reason a memory is either stored or forgotten.

In his influential paper “Feeling and Thinking. Preferences need no Inferences” (Zajonc, 1980), he argued for the idea that affect is “precedent to the intellective qualities and elements of experience” (para. 1), and in line with this he put forward several hypothesis to exhibit the supremacy of affect in information processing - in its independence, primacy and automaticity - over cognition. He collected and presented a host of empirical findings to support his argument. Among those, the mere-exposure effect - the experimental evidence for subject’s preferences, or liking, by merely being exposed to certain stimuli without the subjects’ conscious (and thus assumedly cognitive) processing of them, was cited as the supporting evidence for preferential processing of affect before cognition (or “feeling without knowing” as described by Zajonc) (Zajonc, 1980). Emotional Arousal is defined as the arousal of strong emotions and emotions behavior. It is a physiological state that is entered during anytime of arousal, whether it be negative or positive. Arousal is a heightened sensation in our body and mind to make us more alert. Becoming aroused can come from stimulation which is more commonly found as emotions such as fear and anxiety or sexual and relaxation. Arousal starts in the brain, where the Reticular Activation system connects the primitive brain stem and the cortex and affects sleeping-waking transitions.

Emotions play a significant part in our daily lives, especially to our overall wellbeing whenever we share these experiences with other people. The ability to express and interpret emotions is an important skill that everyone can improve on that would greatly benefit their interpersonal communication. Our expressions accompany our emotions; they serve as windows that allow other people to know what we are feeling inside. There are several factors that influence how we communicate our feelings.
Emotion is the “feeling” aspect of consciousness that includes physical, behavioral, and subjective (cognitive) elements. Emotion also contains three elements which are physical arousal, a certain behavior that can reveal outer feelings and inner feelings. One key part in the brain, the amygdala which is located within the limbic system on each side of the brain, plays a key role in emotional processing which causes emotions such as fear and pleasure to be involved with the human facial expressions.The common-sense theory of emotion states that an emotion is experienced first, leading to a physical reaction and then to a behavioral reaction.The James-Lange theory states that a stimulus creates a physiological response that then leads to the labeling of the emotion. The Cannon-Bard theory states that the physiological reaction and the emotion both use the thalamus to send sensory information to both the cortex of the brain and the organs of the sympathetic nervous system. The facial feedback hypothesis states that facial expressions provide feedback to the brain about the emotion being expressed on the face, increasing all the emotions. In Schachter and Singer’s cognitive arousal theory, also known as the two-factor theory, states both the physiological arousal and the actual arousal must occur before the emotion itself is experienced, based on cues from the environment. The distance learning environment creates a multitude of challenges that students or instructors do not have to deal with in a brick and mortar classroom. One controversial topic may be that people cannot express their emotions effectively online. Online environments are also complicated to have interactions and establish a presence. Is this really the case though? Is it challenging to show emotion online or have a presence; however, it is not impossible. These topics will be discussed in the following.
From the moment they wake up, people experience events that trigger certain emotions. How people react to these events may depend on that person feels during that event. In terms of whether our emotions control us or we control our emotions, I believe that to some extent emotions control us. Because we cannot change how we feel in response to certain stimulus, emotions control us. However, people have some control over whether or not they act on their emotions. Emotions at that given moment can influence our actions. If people can control their reactions, then to some degree we are controlling our emotions. However, the prompts raises several important questions. How can one’s emotions alter other ways of knowing such as perception or reason?
