The Romans were so called religious people who were known for their love of violent and cruel forms of entertainment. This would all take place in the amphitheatre a big stadium that everyone would gather at to enjoy a fun filled day of killings and animal cruelty. I believe the games served a dual purpose that providing entertainment for the people and maintaining the political status of the emperor.
