An article written by Jane Taber—published in 2014 in The Globe and Mail—focuses on the apparent dilemma between healthy eating and staying above the poverty line in Canada. According to the article, more than 1.7 million Canadian households currently struggle to provide nutritious foods for their families due to the low income they are required to live off of (Taber, 2014). There are three particularly applicable social determinants of health to this event: income and social status, personal health practices and coping skills, and healthy child development. People who struggle financially are typically food insecure and tend to choose larger quantities of cheap and unhealthy food over nutritious food that optimizes health. This dilemma between eating healthy and staying above the poverty line also results in various kinds of coping mechanisms, some of which are likely to further hinder an individuals health. Additionally, healthy child development is crucial because food related habits and behaviours are typically established at a young age, which can negatively or positively impact a person’s physical health in the long run. The challenge for people with low incomes to eat healthy has many implications on the nursing profession. It is important for nurses to advocate on behalf of low-income individuals, to intervene when people need help coping and changing their health practices, and to assist parents and children in improving their diets. With the help of nurses and by applying the three aforementioned determinants of health, people can better face the challenges of eating healthy food while simultaneously living below the poverty
In “Is Junk Food Really Cheaper?” by Mark Bittman, argues to change people thinking on fast food because Bittman claims that healthy food is essentially cheaper than fast food. To help support Bittman’s claim he uses many different rhetorical strategies in his editorial. Bittman begins his article by giving the person who reads a few statistics about the price of fast food as of today at high quality restaurants like McDonalds. The title of the editorial correspondingly states a disagreement which he illustrates the illustration of ordering from McDonalds, where he then demonstrates that cooking ourselves is inexpensive. The ability to have access to better resources for sure allows one to explore better options, but for children in a low socioeconomic life style options are limited. For example, children from this type of living lack the finances to shop for healthier more expensive foods. Socioeconomic status is defined by ones education, income, occupation, and is also known to include the social standing of a group or individual (Education and Socioeconomic Status 1). This could lead many people in this status to take up unhealthy eating habits. Children that live in a low socioeconomic lifestyle become the victims of this unhealthy eating and the obesity epidemic that has hit the United States is a result of that. In addition, children that eat too many calories pick up excess weight because of the lack of energy being burned through physical activity (Bales, Coleman, Wallinga 1). The problems with our health care has brought to the table many debates on what we do with it and how do we move forward for the future, and socioeconomic status and childhood obesity has been a part of that debate.
Nutritionism and Today’s Diet Nutritionism is the ideology that the nutritional value of a food is the sum of all its individual nutrients, vitamins, and other components.
