The Dakota people The Dakota people are one of the many Native American tribes in America. The Native Americans are the first people to discover and live in America. They originally come from East-Asia and Siberia but there is still a lot of discussion on how they travelled to America. The most popular theory is that they crossed the Bering Strait. Native Americans are split into many different tribes throughout the whole of America. The Dakota people are divided into Eastern and Western Dakota. Eastern Dakota or also called Santee are situated at the North of America, in central Minnesota and northern Iowa. Western Dakota is composed of the Yankton and Yanktonai. It was a clash between the bands of Dakota and the United States. The war started on the 17th of August in Southwest Minnesota on the banks of the Minnesota River. There are many causes for the war. It started with dishonouring the treaty made in 1851. The treaty promised them money and goods for land however the United States removed many articles from the treaty and the promised goods and money never arrived. Seven years later, Minnesota became a state and the land was divided into cities. A lot of land was taken from the Dakota. The Americans started doing agriculture and logging which then destroyed forests. As a result the land became unsuitable for the Indian way of life. The Dakota could also no longer rely on the fur trade because due to the increase of hunters, game was became scarcer and the US didn’t pay the money they promised the Indians. The official battle began when Dakota warriors successfully attacked American soldiers. After a lot of violence and deaths committed by the Dakota, the president was forced to send out troops to Dakota which was difficult due the Civil War happening at the same time. The troops were successful and managed to defeat the Dakota after a short battle. Shortly after many Dakota warriors surrendered. Little Crow, an important Indian chief, was forced to run away to Canada with his family before the war officially ended. He returned to Minnesota and was killed whilst picking wild raspberries with his teenage
