This essay will compare and contrast “The Curse,” by Josh Ritter and “The Landlady” by Roald Dahl. “The Curse” is a song about a mummy who falls in love with a lady, then she gets cursed and dies. “The Landlady” is about a dude who goes to a hotel run by an old lady who stuffs dead guests. These stories use irony, but for different reasons. One story is sad, the other is unnerving. Overall, both stories have a similar theme of the death. The difference is that in one, the murder was accidental. Both stories have death by loving someone. For instance, in the curse the lady loves the mummy but gets cursed! Josh Ritter writes, “She stops going out, she just lies there in bed In hotels in whatever towns they are speaking Then her face starts to set and her hands start to fold And one day the dry fig of her heart stops its beating” This tragedy only happened because she loved the mummy. In the landlady, guests love the landlady because she is a cute, old lady on the surface. She takes advantage of this love in order to kills and stuffs the guests. The character foreshadows this by saying, “I stuff all my little pets when they pass away.” It sounds innocent, but she is really admitting that she kills and stuffs all the people who come to her hotel. …show more content…
