Through tragedy, two all male societies are established as they fight for survival, in similar circumstances. The situations the groups now find themselves in are less favourable and require them to work together. Cooperating with each other is key to their survival, as well as gathering and rationing resources. One group of men is trapped in a mine where their only resources come from a small emergency centre underground. This takes place in a movie called The 33 directed by Patricia Riggen. The other story is about several young boys stranded on a deserted island after a plane crash that has left them with no adults. Initially in both stories there is an incident that traps a group of males in a secluded, unknown location. They are forced to work together to survive. As the stories progress we see an instance in each where someone threatens to kill another person. For example, in The 33, one man threatens to murder another man because he uses his iPod. One of the main differences we see is the outcome of the situations. In The 33, no on dies or is murdered. However, in Lord of the Flies, two murders are committed, with one of those confirmed as intentional. In Lord of the Flies Roger purposefully pushes a boulder that strikes Piggy’s head, “The rock struck Piggy a glancing blow from chin to knee, “ which killed him stone dead. Their situations are also similar in the way that they are stuck in a location unknown by the outside world. (Transition word) These situations are different because in The 33 the outside world eventually discovers the groups whereabouts and the challenge is extracting them from the underground cavity. These two stories show us that survival not only happens when they are on a deserted island, or when they are competing in The Hunger Games but always for people such as Katniss who was forced to supply her family with food after the death of her father by hunting and for Piggy as being constantly bullied for wearing glasses, being overweight and having asthma. While both of them show how far humans can go for survival Lord of the Flies shows us that the perception of human civilization is nothing more than a brittle delusion, where everyone is struggling to survive every day.

When placed on a deserted island, a group of strangers banded together to try to survive. They decided on a leader, problem-solved, fought off a beast, and formed their own society, even if it was somewhat flawed. This was the situation in the famous TV show, Lost. The Lord of the Flies and Lost are similar in these many different ways, with the exception that the show featured a tribe of adults instead of children. That just proves how difficult it is to maintain order in a society; even the adults struggled with keeping it peaceful and civilized. In Lord of the Flies, William Golding presents a broken society of savage boys fighting one another to suggest that man’s capacity for evil is brought out by the need for power and control.

During the course of the essay I will explain how the conch shell that is found at the foundation of the first chapter plays a significant role throughout the novel and how diverse themes are brought on from this influential shell. This essay will express an opinion on the conch shell, in the end has more power and order than the actual ‘beast’ that is signified on the island. I will also explore the social leadership of the conch throughout the novel which will also touch on a few themes that the conch shell plays a role in. In William Golding's Lord of the Flies a group of kids who are fleeing a war, plane crashes and they are stranded on a deserted island without Adult supervision. The first thing all the kids do is vote for a chief and Ralph, who is more responsible, wins over Jack. They are the choices because Ralph is the Colonel of the whole group and Jack is the oldest out of all the boys. As the story goes on and when Jack starts his own group all of the kids lose sight of their main goal, to be rescued. They're all having too much fun when they switch over to Jack's group hunting and killing for food. In the story there are four main characters that are in a sense the leaders of the crew. There's Piggy and a quiet Simon who do not possess the scrappiness that Ralph and Jack do. These strengths are what help Ralph and Jack survive. Piggy is always talking about how his Auntie would not let him do this or that and Simon was just a quiet, reserved kid who is regarded as weird just due to the fact that he is calm.

When the children become stranded on the island, the rules of society no longer apply to them. Without the supervision of their parents or of the law, the primitive nature of the boys surfaces, and their lives begin to fall apart. The downfall starts with their refusal to gather things for survival. The initial reaction of the boys is to swim, run, jump, and play. They do not wish to build shelters, gather food, or keep a signal fire going. Consequently, the boys live without luxury that could have been obtained had they maintained a society on the island. Instead, these young boys take advantage of their freedom and life as they knew it deteriorates.
Importance of Leadership Leadership is something that stands out in people. In a group, people tend to look for the strongest person to follow. However, the strongest person may not be the best choice to follow. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, Ralph and Jack each have leadership qualities. Jack is probably the stronger of the two; however, Ralph is a better leader.
In the Lord of the Flies and The Lottery there are different motives for killing different people. In The Lord of the Flies they have strange reasons for attempting too kill Ralph. They leave his tribe after Jack creates his own tribe, which is more fun for the boys. Eventually they get violent and try too kill Ralph because they feel he will try too kill them or steal their supplies. In "The Lottery" they try too kill the new person for immature and stupid reasons. They try too kill him because his father would not participate in the brutal killing of a innocent person, this is known as The Lottery. There are more differences between the two books than just that though.

Of the group of young boys there are two who want to lead for the duration of their stay, Jack and Ralph. Through the opposing characters of Jack and Ralph, Golding reveals the gradual process from democracy to dictatorship from Ralph's democratic election to his lack of law enforcement to Jack's strict rule and his violent law enforcement.
