Self-image, cultural heroes, and tolerance are all very important to have in a multicultural novel as the themes teach the reader how to act in society and how to be a better person. In the story ‘Buddha’ by Deepak Chopra, the main character Siddhartha holds the values of self-image, cultural heroes, and tolerance very effectively as he evolves as a human being. The author shows that having a good self-image is very important through Siddhartha by showing his positivity and love for the world. The author is sending a message about the values of cultural heroes through Siddhartha’s life by showing his loyalty and perseverance. Finally, the author is saying that tolerance is key the self realization and survival through Siddhartha’s journey. First, self-image will be discussed and how the author sends a message through Siddhartha saying that having a good self-image is essential. To start off, self-image is one of the main themes in ‘Buddha’ by Deepak Chopra as he shows the readers through Siddhartha how having a high self-esteem with confidence, loyalty and a strong belief is very important in your life. The author shows through Siddhartha that having confidence in who you are is very important and that you should always believe in who you are, no matter what is happening. No matter who told Siddhartha what to be like, he never forgot who he truly was. For example, “Gautama always wanted to lean, but he did not want to give up who he was.” (pg. 54, Chopra) Gautama was always very confident in who he was. He never forgot who he was, or even where he came from once he began his spiritual journey. Through many points and facts, it is clear that the message Deepak Chopra is sending through the themes Self-image, cultural heroes, and tolerance is that if the reader has all three themes strongly inside themselves, it will shape them into a better person as long as they believe.
