Did you know that three ounces of lean beef has 180 calories and in order to get the same amount of protein you must eat seven tablespoons of peanut butter, which has more than 600 calories? Meatless Monday is being portrayed as a benefit to both your health and the environment. Unfortunately, that is incorrect: VIV magazine claims that if you cut meat out of your diet one day per week, you can lose weight and become healthier overnight. It would be nice to find a solution that easy for all of us who have struggled with weight issues. In the US red meat consumption accounts for 58% of the diet and processed meats accounts for $22 of total meat consumption. In the U.S and other developing countries meat is a significant part of a normal diet, more than 15% of daily energy intake, 40% of daily protein intake and 20% of daily fat intake. (Daniel et.) Meat consumption in developing nations is also on a rise as these countries become more financially stable with better distribution methods. In developed nations such as the US and European Union, meat consumption has increased steadily from 1961 to 2003, and has doubled from 1909 to 2007 (Daniel et). Red meat is an essential part of a healthy, balanced diet and is the best source of a high, quality protein, along with several other essential nutrients. Personally, I have lost 50 pounds in just more than 18 months by eating red meat every day. Zinc, iron and protein are all found in red meat and often are key ingredients often missing from our diets. Don’t forget that red meat also contains essential amino acids and vitamin A and the list goes on. The nine essential amino acids that are found in meat, that the body can’t produce on its own are phenylalanine, valine, tryptophan, thr... ... middle of paper ... ...igh lean protein diet lost more weight after three months than those on a conventional diet. It’s hard to judge whether people lose weight eating meat, as meat is often paired with potatoes and starches that cause weight gain. The reported association between processed meat and colon cancer risk is known to be stronger than for unprocessed red meat. It is said that 80% of colon cancer cases are caused by modifiable diet and lifestyle factors (McAfee et). Red meat is an essential protein that is needed in our daily life. It provides many nutrients that are essential. Just with any other food, choose lean cuts and limit calorie intake while exercising to burn calories will help you maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle. Being active and conscience of your food and drink intake not only makes you a healthier you but less likely to get cancer and other illnesses.
I will first show the lack of validity and soundness to Howard’s claim that A) a vegan lifestyle is a healthier choice and B) his claim that one must switch to that lifestyle to enjoy these said benefits. To the claim made in A, Howard uses his own health problems he endured on his meat diet, and uses it as a constant variable comparing it to his now relative healthy lifestyle as a vegan. On first glance anyone who eats a calorie-laden, unbalanced diet and ends up weighing 300 pounds, as Lyman himself admitted, will have health problems regardless of his orientation to meat or vegetables. With this said his comparing analogy is inertly flawed and must be disregarded from the argument he presents. On march 8 before the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, Mary K Young, MS.,R.D,NCBA Director of Nutrition Research and Information, presented the benefits of eating meat. Using Data from the 1995 USDA Continuing Survey of Food Intakes by Individuals (CSI) she confirms that red meat enhances one overall diet quality. Young goes on to point out that red meat is the number one source for protein, B12, and zinc, number 2 source for B6 and third greatest source for iron, niacin and potassium. She also pointed out that red meat alone has the greatest concentrates of iron and zinc together. Also included cited in Young’s report was the research recently published in the Journal of the American...

Every day across America millions of people wake up to start their morning. Throughout the day the vast majority of these people will consume meat, but 3% will replace the pig, cow, and chicken products for vegetable or fruit made meals (Harris). These vegetarians all have many different reasons to make this choice. This decision is a huge change in one’s life and is not without questions. Some people may wonder why would anyone abstain from the amazing food that contains meat. This essay will briefly explain the history of vegetarianism, the reasons for vegetarianism, and answer questions about vegetarianism. Vegetarian diets are all around better than diets containing meat because of three main reasons; the abuse of animals, the environmental damage, and the health benefits for humans.
... only do I feel fitter on daily basis, my body hasn't been seriously sick since being vegetarian. I actually was convinced to finally give up meat after reading the book “The Kind Diet” by Alicia Silverstone. I have never been fond of killing animals but once educating myself I knew I could never go back to consuming meat.
In the article,Rethinking the Meat-Guzzler, Mark Bittman discusses the devastating effects the meat diet has on the planet. As the population continues to increase, the consumption of meat also increases. According to the article, it states that “Americans are downing close to 200 pounds of meat, poultry and fish per capita per
Roughly over 20% of 121,000 middle-aged men and women died over a period of 28 years during a study of red meat effects on the body (Harding). Beef, pork, lamb, mutton, and veal are all red meats. While these meats are rich in vitamins and protein, they can lose much of their benefits through cooking and processing. Limiting how much red meat an individual eats could add years to their life by avoiding heart disease, certain cancers, and diabetes. By simply replacing one meal weekly, that consists of red meat, for a meal that is poultry, fish, nuts, or vegetable based could reduce the risk of dying in middle aged years by 7 to 9% (Harding).
Today’s medical experts say that avoiding meat helps you avoid saturated fat. They have found out from studies that women who eat meat daily have a fifty percent greater risk of developing heart disease than vegetarian women and a sixty-eight percent greater risk in men (staff writer). People may not know about serious diseases meat can cause such as, mad cow disease and foot-and-mouth disease. In the September 1999 issue of the Emerging Infectious Diseases, approximately 76 million food-borne illnesses- resulting in 325,000 hospitalizations and 5,000 deaths occur in the United States each year from improperly cooked or diseased meat (Licher). That is a lot of fun!

Meat is seen as this ultimate source of food. It is a rare, valuable source of food full of important nutrition which we need to survive. In the hunter gather days, 2.3million years ago, obtaining meat was difficult because it had to be hunted for (ProCon.org). Our ancestors saw meat as a source of extremely nutrient dense food that would keep them and their families from going hungry, especially in the winter. Most of the time our ancestors had to survive on the plants that they had gathered to keep themselves from going hungry. Our ancestors risked their lives just for a little bit of meat. But now, in our modern era, we have no need to hunt for food. Meat is conveniently provided to us in large quantities from meat factories. If our ancestors
A low-meat-intake is diet is described as a single 3 oz serving of meat per day or less, people on this diet usually eat meat infrequently, or in small amounts at a time, whereas a the common western diet consumes about 8 oz of red and white meat per day, however white meat is not an issue of health (Gunnars, “is red meat good or bad for you? An objective look”). Vegetarians of course do not consume meat, there is however, 3 different types of vegetarians: Vegan, Lacto-ovovegetarian, and Lacto-vegetarians. Lacto-ovovegetarians eat eggs as well as dairy
Meat is a coroner stone to the majority of American’s diets. I would venture to say the majority of American’s eat meat for their three meals a day. Eating meat isn’t all bad, it actually brings a good source of protein to one’s diet, in a moderate amount. In 2012 a study was done and found that the U.S. total meat consumption was 52.1 billion pounds. That comes out to be 270.7 pounds per person. We still eat more meat than just about any other country, besides Luxembourg (A Nation of Meat Eaters). Eating red meat is bad for humans because of the negative health effects, the environmental issues it causes, and the inhumane treatment of the animals.
People have used the argument that eating meat plays an important role in the overall health of a human and it is the way the cycle of life is meant to be, but this is not the case. Eating meat is unnecessary. Becoming a vegetarian could save countless animals from unnecessary suffering, improve human health, and help preserve numerous natural resources.
Is it wise for individuals to engage in a vegetarian lifestyle? Furthermore, is eating meat ethical? Should individuals protest meat as a solution to this issue? As long as animals are harmed in the process of getting dinner to the table, controversy over the ethicality of eating meat will prosper. With this said, including meat in one’s diet is both logical and ethical. Although vegetarians believe that their lifestyle benefits their health, the environment, and the economy, while ensuring the safety of animals; benefits of an omnivorous diet far outweigh those of a vegetarian diet. An omnivorous diet not only nourishes our bodies, but also aligns us with our natural way of life.
Having a healthy dietary method can reduce the chances of receiving many health diseases. These health diseases include obesity, heart disease, and cancer. By consuming certain foods and nutrients in one’s diet the risk factors for these health diseases can be reduced. A healthy dietary method that is beneficial to reducing and/or improving these health diseases is the vegetarian diet. The vegetarian diet follows a dietary pattern that is characterized by the consumption of plant-like foods and the avoidance of flesh foods (meat, poultry, and fish). The foods in this diet provide the body with many essential nutrients. This is why many health benefits have been associated with the vegetarian diet. This dietary method has been linked to reducing the causes of obesity, heart disease, and cancer.
However, many people still refuse to be a vegetarian for different reasons. Some people prefer the taste of meat, and some people believe that they are born to eat meat. Despite that about 2 billion people in the world live basically on the meat diet, around 4 billion people live mainly on a plant-based diet because of food shortage(Pimentel & Pimentel, 2003, pp660S). As everyone knows, the number of population is growing. For example, the total U.S. population doubled in the previous 60 years, and it may double again in the next 70 years (Pimentel & Pimentel, 2003, pp660S). People won’t have enough meat to eat in the future. On the other hand, a well-planned vegetarian diet offers many health benefits. Therefore, people should become vegetarian because it benefits to huma...
