Back in the 1800’s, African-Americans were not allowed to get an education. However, when the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, slaves were freed and education became legal for them. Bowie State University was one of the first schools to educate black students. This is the mainstay of Michelle Obama’s speech to the 2013 graduating class of Bowie State. She begins by recognizing several important figures such as the president of Bowie State, Mickey Burnim, as well as others who helped in the ceremony. She praises the class for all their hard work and swiftly moves into the history of why they are all here. Before the Emancipation Proclamation it was illegal for blacks to learn. The forties and fifties in the United States was a period dominated by racial segregation and racism. Walking into a lecture hall in Gregory Hall, I really didn’t know what to expect. I dressed as I would any other day; an Abercrombie shirt, a pair of frayed shorts and some casual sandals. In an expressive voice, Ms. Angelou paints a memorable picture of a small black community anticipating graduation day fifty-five years ago. She describes the children as trembling "visibly with anticipation" and the teachers being "respectful of the now quiet and aging seniors." Although it is autobiographical, an omniscient voice in the first six paragraphs describes how "they" - the black children in Stamps - felt and acted before the omniscient voice changes to a limited omniscient narration in the seventh paragraph. Richard Wright’s 1940 novel “Native Son” is about a troubled young man in his early twenties set in the Chicago's Southside’s ghetto; he is unemployed and looking to find out who he really is. Fear, hatred, and racism are central conflicts, and it influenced Bigger Thomas, the protagonist, ravaging his uniqueness so relentlessly that his self-expression resulted in violence. Wright used Bigger Thomas to exemplify the effects that racism has on the psychological state of the African American victims. Through symbols Wright expresses racism and hypocrisy of the justice system as a negative influence on the dream of Bigger, the “Native Son”.

The basic idea of the American Dream generally has stayed the same throughout time, although the majority of Americans seem to take the Dream for granted. The first settlers arrived to the New World in search of a treasure: life, liberty, and freedom. This treasure was and still is the American Dream. Now people from all over the world come to America in search of the same Dream; some even die trying. People were not as materialistic as people are now; they just wanted happiness. As time passed, people became more materialistic and began to take for granted what they were born with. For example, when my papa was a teenager he purchased his first car with cash. As more and more African American students were admitted into white Southern schools, segregationists continued to retaliate and defend their schools against them. No matter how difficult the situation turned out for some of them, and without much help from the government, African Americans did everything they possibly could to protect their educational rights for the sake of their future and success, and in the hope of promoting equality for all African American people in the United States. These students became the symbol of freedom and opened up the window of opportunity for all black people, for their ancestors, and for the future generations to come. What is “The American Dream” and how does one obtain that lifestyle? Many believe the American Dream to be, “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness,” brought to us by the Declaration of Independence. But if one looks up the actual definition in the dictionary you’ll get something that sounds a little like this: “The ideal that every US citizen should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity.” Although in the end, the American Dream is perceived through many different perspectives, I believe it is very much obtainable.
