Thomas Jefferson’s statement, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” (Declaration of Independence), is probably the most famous phrase in U.S. History. It simply and eloquently summarizes both the principals and ideals of American society. While history is full of cases where individual Americans who through enslaving or discriminating against their fellow men have hindered society from living up to this ideal, there are also many individuals who brought America closer to this ideal. Before that, it lead to the creation of mass media and greatly expanded the reach of individual communication. This increased communication helped to decrease the knowledge gap between classes, spurred consumerism, and spread advocacy (Cite). Prior to wireless telegraphy, the only form of mass media was the printed word. The printed word is impaired by illiteracy and physical distribution (cite). Thus, news produced prior to Tesla’s could only be understood by the well educated man who had could read and afford to Alternating Current books and other publications. Wireless technology allowed everyman to understand news for it can transmit information in the form of regular speech(Cite) without the expense or limitation of physical distribution. In doing so “it brought together members of different classes and backgrounds to experience the world as a nation,” (Cite). Tesla created the first x-Rays and set the fundamentals for all X-rays to follow. Originally, X-rays were used for imaging bones, for they could easily be distinguished from soft tissues. As film technologies improved and Alternating Current focusing systems and more sensitive detection methods came into use, it became possible to distinguish more details within the bone and surrounding tissue. The impact of the Tesla's invention of the x-ray machine should not be understated. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration states that X-ray imaging exams are recognized as a valuable medical tool for a wide variety of examinations and procedures. “They are used as a noninvasive and painless method for diagnosing disease and monitoring therapy, supporting medical and surgical treatment planning. They are also used in guiding medical personnel as they insert catheters, stents or other devices into the body; treat tumors; or remove blood clots or other blockages” (cite). By allowing doctors to see the inside of bodies eradicated the need for exploratory surgery. During WWI when the invention was introduced the survival rate increased dramatically for gunshot wounds as doctors could more precisely know where the shrapnel was located before cutting open the body (site).
