Temple of the Feathered Serpent
Teotihuacan is an ancient Mayan city that can be found about 25 miles away from modern Mexico City. This large ancient city has several pyramids and the third largest pyramid is The Temple of the Feathered Serpent. The pyramid is hardly the most famous one associated with this archaeological site but it did gain popularity during the 1980s because of a series of discoveries of curious tombs located below the structure. There are over two hundred sacrificial burials that archaeologists believe were buried as a part of a dedication of the temple. It’s a valley in Egypt that was used for over 500 years during ancient Egyptian times as a resting place for Pharoahs. The site’s most famous Pharaoh buried at the site is King Tut, which started the Pharoah’s Curse legend when a group of Archaeologists died excavating the tomb. Almost all of the tombs have been ransacked since ancient times but, much of the beauty and architectural ingenuity can still be seen at the site. The extensive stone army was meant to protect the first emperor of China Qin Shi Huang in the afterlife and they date back to 210-209 BC. The army totals in at 8,000 soldiers, 130 chariots with 520 horses. The statues filled three massive pits that sat nearby to the former emperor’s burial site. The army was actually discovered by accident when farmers dug a well by the tomb where they found fragments of the army. Museums were called and by investigating the local area, the army was found again in 1974, 2000 years after it was first constructed. Discovered in 1974 a group of farmers digging wells near Xi'an, China stumbled upon the tomb of Qin Shi Huang which is located 22 miles east of Xian Shi Huangdi. (259 BC - 210 BC), the first emperor of China, inherited the throne at the age of 13, when construction of his tomb began. He was responsible for several immense construction projects built by his people, including the Great Wall of China. The Aztecs believed they owed the gods everything for creating them and the world around them, therefore the gods needed to be fed or nourished daily. To honor their gods and show their gratitude they performed human sacrifices by offering hearts and blood. In doing so, they believed human sacrifices would ensure their existence to the world, and in turn help them in their after life. Aztecs also saw these rituals as a way to send a political message to control their own citizens and instill fear in their foreign neighbors. These sacrifices were performed by a specialized priest at the great temple, the Huey Teocalli, at the very top of the pyramid for all to witness. In these altares family members put pictures of their family members who have passed away, with some of their favorite foods and drinks. A big role in altares are candles, marigolds, salt, water, and skulls. The candles represent the light in which the souls should follow in order to find their homes. The marigolds are the official Day of the Dead flowers but other flowers can be used in their place as well. The flowers represent how fragile life is and the petals are also used to create a path for the souls to follow. The salt and water come as a pair. The salt is to remain pure from any evil they may attract to their visit on earth and the water is is not only to pass down the salt but to to quench the thirst as well because the souls have had a long journey and they need to remain hydrated. Lastly the skulls, majority of these skulls decoration are made of sugar because Mexico is rich in sugar but also because many people are poor it’s easier to make them rather than buying expensive decorations. Maya architecture is best characterized by the soaring pyramid temples and ornate palaces which were built in all Mayan cities across Mesoamerica from El Tajin in the north to Copan in the south. Pyramids were the epicenter of all Mayan cities because the culture was based on a theocratic design; the famed stepped pyramids had both political and religious significance and unifying Mayan civilization. With large quantities of limestone and flint available, plaster and cement were easily produced. This allowed the Mayans to build impressive temples, with stepped pyramids, multi-level elevated platforms, massive step-pyramids, corbelled roofing, monumental stairways, and exteriors decorated with sculpture and moldings of Mayan hieroglyphs, geometric shapes, and iconography from religion such as serpent masks are all typical features of Maya architecture. On the summits were thatched- roof temples, known as "Triadic Groups".
The original church was built in 1804 and was for both white men and Indians alike. The first preacher was Joseph Brady who was pastor for 17 years. It wasn't a greatly populated area but people came from miles around for the services. As the settlement grew so did the congregation and they soon built a new church on High Street in 1841. Even with the main church there were still occasional services held in the old one until is was blown down by a storm in 1866 (Hein, 957).

In the Central America, most notably the Yucatan Peninsula, are the Maya, a group of people whose polytheistic religion and advanced civilization once flourished (Houston, 43). The Maya reached their peak during the Classic Period from around CE 250 to the ninth century CE when the civilization fell and dispersed (Sharer, 1). Although much has been lost, the gods and goddesses and the religious practices of the Classic Maya give insight into their lives and reveal what was important to this society. The major Mayan gods and goddesses all have common characteristics and, according to “features which they share in large part with the gods of neighboring people of Middle America” (Thompson, 198). The Coffin of Tentkhonsu, observed at the National Museum of Natural History, was very eye drawing, its drawings on the outside and inside captive that mummies journey to rebirth.
