A study was done in 2011, almost a year and a half after the first season of 16 and Pregnant first aired, and it turns out that there was a 5.7% reduction in the number of births of girls between the ages of 15 and 19 (Wilson). While this drop in birth rates among teens is a positive impact, it did not last as long as hoped. A few years after Teen Mom aired in 2009, birth rates started to slightly increase. I believe this is because of how the girls’ lives are portrayed on the shows to seem so easy while having to take care of their child.
Altogether, I think that Teen Mom and 16 and Pregnant are not giving us the realistic views of young pregnancy and life after. These shows are not showing a good example for young girls out there. With all of the teen pregnancy our world has now, it is important that teens are taught the dangers and consequences of what could happen if they get pregnant. Instead of glamorizing teen pregnancy, the shows should have made these girls’ lives and situations more realistic so that young viewers would have a better understanding of what could actually happen
Teen pregnancy, in my opinion, is awful. I feel that young women should not be having children at such a young age. I feel that these teenagers that are having babies are children themselves, and do not know how to take care of them as well as an older, more mature person might.

Not even today I don’t think there is anything really out there to shown what being a teen mom is really like, the real struggles. I really don’t think that we concentrate enough on preventing teen pregnancies in America. We have TV shows about being a teen mom, but I don’t think it accurately portrays the life of a teen mom. It is hard it’s physically, mentally and emotionally draining, and if you choose to take on the responsibility by yourself and do it all on your own it is extra
High school years are supposed to be a time for fun and exciting events in every adolescent's life. There are parties, ball games, and local after school hangout joints where we can meet. All combined to making high school the most memorable years of any teenage girl?s life. However, my experience in high school took an uneventful turn in tenth grade. My carefree ways had to end and a new wave of responsibility was presented to me. I found out that I was two months pregnant. My thoughts tugged at my conscience, how was I to tell the father of my unborn child? Would my mother support my decision? I had to forget about my partying ways and hanging with my friends. My freedom days of coming and going were about to be over and I quickly became the girl about whom everyone was talking.
Teen pregnancy is up partly because there is less of a stigma associated with teen pregnancy since there is more of a "cultural permission" to be a younger mother. The rise is also partly due to the portrayal of celebrity teens such as Jamie Lynn Spears in the media and other cultural shifts, giving teens the idea that "having a baby is the new handbag".

The number of teenage girls across the country who became pregnant fell 12 percent between 1991 and 1996. This drops affects girls, of different races and socioeconomic backgrounds, in all states. But the problem remains; The U.S. teen pregnancy rate is the highest of any industrialized countries.
