Teaching Holocaust in Schools
The Holocaust was a horrible event in the history of the modern world.
Millions of people were needlessly and ruthlessly exterminated at the
hands of the Nazis. There are few people in Britain who feel that the
Holocaust should not be taught in schools. While it is important to
teach about the Holocaust to children, it will be in vain if we do not
know why we do it. My high school is a diverse one and there are many
reasons why it should be taught there.
One of the most important reasons has been summed up rather well by
George Santayana, an American philosopher and poet. His famous line
is, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."
In spirit, this unoriginal quotation says that if you do not learn
what went wrong in the past, then the same mistake will happen again.
If it does not get taught, then people will forget. And that is
dangerous. In fact, the dangers of it have already been seen this
decade. As less and less people were getting education on the
Holocaust, less and less people were paying attention to the world
around them. Nobody noticed when a civil war in the former Yugoslavia
turned into almost a replica of the Nazi's Holocaust. Concentration
camps, mass graves, genocide, just as in Germany, yet nobody noticed.
While less and less British people were getting educated on the
Holocaust, less and less noticed the concentration camps,
totalitarianism, and religious persecution in the People's Republic of
China. Less and less noticed because less and less people knew that
they should notice. Therefore, if the children of Britain do not learn
about the Holocaust, they will be condemned to repeat it.
As you may imagine with any public school, there are not too many
Jewish students. That is not to say that the student population is not
diverse, because it is. In fact, that student diversity leads to
another reason why the holocaust should be taught in my school. While
The Holocaust is one of the most learned about events in history. The question is, why do we learn about it? We choose to keep the horrors of the Holocaust fresh in our minds and the minds of our children to keep it from ever happening again. A lot of people may argue that it is not necessary for America to teach global conflicts like the Holocaust and Rwanda, however, it is important to learn about it to keep the citizens safe for future conflicts. If we continue to teach it in schools, it will be prevented in the future and to inform people on all the innocent lives that were lost and how cruel some people can be, and if one person steps up and tries to make a difference, the amount of genocides could really go down. I grew up across the street from two high schools. One of them, Fiorello Laguardia High School, is a special admissions public school for students who are gifted in the performing or visual arts. The student population at Laguardia is relatively diverse with students of all races attending, although the majority of the students, as at all of the NYC special admissions high schools, is white and Asian. The other high school, Martin Luther King jr. High School is a "regular" public high school. The population is almost entirely African American and Hispanic with a very small minority of Asian students.

Although the Holocaust continues conveying negative influences, the Holocaust also led to positive medical and technological improvements. In fact, numerous improvements are unknowingly implemented in societies today. Therefore, the Holocaust is one of the most horrific and influencing events in history whose repercussions are still felt in Germany today. However, in spite of the horrific occurrences, the associated medical findings and technological improvements make it intricate to look at the Holocaust as plainly evil. Thus, societies should view the Holocaust with a broader perspective.
The Holocaust is a very important time in history. With many other time periods and events, the Holocaust was quite gruesome. Five to six millions Jews were killed, making it a mass genocide. They did that because Sweden was a free country and the Nazi’s did not have control over them.
The phrase "a lesson to be learned and a tragedy to behold" has been indelibly attached to the Holocaust that to think of it in any other way is thought to insult all those of the Jewish community who lost their lives to the attempted genocide of their race by the Nazi regime. Despite such brevity attached to learning lessons from the Holocaust one must wonder whether the lesson has actually been learned or if people will continue to repeat the mistakes of the past. Angela Merkel, the current German Chancellor, has stated that the German experiment towards multi-culturalism has failed, those who wish to migrate into the country must learn the German way whether it is the language they speak, the culture they have or the very religion they hold dear . Such sentiments seem to echo those of the former Third Reich which held the German way, the Aryan way, as the only path to which people should attempt to pursue. While this paper is not trying to vilify the current German government nor is it trying to compare it to the Third Reich, the fact remains that the steps their government is taking fall uneasily close to that of their vilified predecessor. The fact is though, the German government is merely following through with the popular sentiment of its citizenry who believe immigrants coming into the country disrupts the German way of life and all attempts to live side by side in peace have failed. Despite being a predominantly Christian nation who supposedly follow the way of Christ, to hear them say that makes one wonder whether their claims truly reflects their deeds. It is from this situation that the essay of Eckardt and its view that the Holocaust is a "Christian Problem" becomes relevant to what is happening in the world today.
Taking as much as a simple action can really help prevent the future genocide, also it can help save so many lives. You don’t have to do anything big or dangerous but to take small courage and spread out the words, to teach others about the Holocaust is the simplest thing you can do and it gives affection to the world. The Holocaust is an overpowering example of this terrifying genocide and persecution and in the memory of the Jews; the memory of its horror must encourage our younger generations to engage against such heinous crimes today and in the future.
