Many songs tell a story and that is exactly what Taylor Swift’s “Our Song” does, it tells the story of a high school girl who is riding in a car with her boyfriend and realizes that they do not have a special song for each other. The first stanza is her describing the setting and her epiphany that the couple lacks a song to describe their relationship. Swift, the speaker has this realization in his front seat of her boyfriends car tells him, hoping for his help. The second stanza is the chorus; it describes their first date and their late night conversations, which is ultimately their song. Her boyfriend wrote out their song a note card and added to the pile of roses; although, she almost did not notice on her bed because her day was long and bad. She described it as “after everything that day/Had gone all wrong/And lost and thrown away” (Swift). The connotation of just wanting to come home and lay down is evident; however, this day makes a turn for the best with the roses. The tone of the second stanza starts gloomy discussing her bad day, but it transforms with her finding the roses and the note. The next stanza after the repeated chorus is the bridge and is a mere three lines and simply describes how she listened to the radio to search and find a song similar theirs, but nothing was satisfactory. The final verse has the same first three lines as the first, but closes with “I grabbed a pen/And an old napkin/And I wrote down our song,” (Swift) a perfect finish with imagery.
