Tattooing is an ancient form of art and body modification that is most commonly used as a form of self expression. To all those who are strongly opposed to tattoos, it should be known that, “In ancient times, tattoos were not only applied for decoration, but they also held a symbolic significance.” (theartcareerproject.com). So contrary to popular belief, tattoos are not only celebrated in biker and gang cultures. It’s not exactly easy to become a tattooist. Often times, jobs will offer descriptions in their applications and tattoo artistry is no exception. What most people forget to consider when it comes to tattooing, is that safety always comes first. As well as pleasing the client’s aesthetic, “One of the major aspects of a tattoo artist’s job is safety and sterilization. Because so many dangerous pathogens and diseases can be easily transmitted through body fluid and blood, a tattoo artist must take precautions to prevent that.” (theartcareerproject.com). Just like any other job, it is important to make the customer’s experience as enjoyable as possible, making sure to value their safety highly. Obviously, safety and sterilization are the top priority, but there are several other things to keep in mind as well. After the sanitary component of the job is covered, “...you will be using needles and permanent ink in the second layer of skin to ultimately create a beautiful piece of artwork.” (learnu.org). In fact, the reason tattoos are so painful is that the artists are actually puncturing the client’s dermis over and over. So in addition to knowing about safety and sterilization, tattooists must also be artistically well versed and be capable of gauging the thickness of the skin. Unfortunately, the amount an artist earns per year is very different for each person, so it’s slightly difficult to get a truly accurate median. According to the Alliance of Professional Tattooists, ¨The national median salary for tattoo artists is $30,415 per year¨ (study.com). This median, however, is not accounting for overworking and/or underworking; the flexibility of the pay is incredibly lenient. One’s commitment to their work and clients makes a difference in their success with business, which then leads to a much higher income. While pay is not unreasonable, “As with most art careers, however, this salary is not a constant, and it can vary depending on a tattoo artist’s skills and location, among other things” (theartcareerproject.com). That said, time and effort will pay off, but living in a place with a higher demand for tattoos can also increase the salary and amount of clientele. As said previously, it is extremely common for majority of careers in the art field to have hit-and-miss salaries. You have to just build your establishment until you’ve developed a steady stream of clients; then you may be able to count on a steady income and salary.
