TJ Mcmahon's Responsibilities

Enthusiasm, confidence, optimism and a willingness to work - - these are but a few of TJ McMahon’s qualities. This is an exceptional young man whose resume clearly demonstrates not only his involvement but his desire to make a difference. Yet, like everyone else, TJ is much more than a mere collection of titles. I am honored to have been asked to share what I have learned about TJ through my contact with him at SLTP.

I first met TJ when he attended one of the student leadership training conferences that I direct. Our summer program attracts student leaders from all over New England. That summer (3 years ago), student leaders from 101 schools from seven states and two countries attended the program. The "typical" delegate is a junior, holds three student offices and is among the tops in his/her class. That background information is important, because my role as director does not allow me to become closely involved with the delegates. Generally, I work with the delegates only in general sessions, although I do get to observe all of the classrooms, group sessions and activities, as a result, I do not get to "know" …show more content…

Here he proved to be exceptional. He stood out. One of the first things that you notice is that TJ is an active listener and questioner. He listens, internalizes and is not timid about asking questions. At that first conference I watched him internalize each lesson, then put it into practice. During this experience, TJ was able to demonstrate his strength of character through his willingness and drive to share his skills with and for the benefit of others. He used the opportunity to practice his leadership skills. I believe that the experience of working with so many strong leaders enabled TJ to see the strength of his own leadership.
