1. INTRODUCTION OF POTATO CHIPS:
Potato chips also called as potato crisps were invented in the year 1853 by Native American George Crum. The story behind the invention goes like this. George was employed as a chef at an elegant resort in Saratoga Springs, New York. One dinner guest felt George’s French fries too thick for his liking and rejected the order. In order to rile the guest Crum decided to make fries too thin and crisp. But seeing the browned, paper thin fries the guest was overjoyed and other guest present there also started requesting Crum’s potato chips. There after potato chips began to appear on the menu as Saratoga chips, a house specialty (John E. Harmon). From then on potato chips went on to capture the snack market.

Food is an important factor in the everyday human life. Humans need food to be able to live. But how did the food people eat today come about, no one really knows the in depth explanation. What about more common foods that are a part of everyone’s everyday lives, like potato chips. They are a simple, easy snack food that is commonly in every American household. But does anyone know how they came about, who invented them. Well, let me explain a little about who that person was.

The third potato chip will be placed in a hundred percent solution. I believe that this will make the potato chips shrivel and become flexible and stringy. This is because there is a higher concentration outside the cells and the water is being taken out to even the concentrations. This is what happens when a plant dies. The water leaves it in osmosis and the plant wilts and dies.
Due to the relative ease of growing the potato it became the major staple in the diet of the people in Ireland. An Irish legend wrecked of the Irish coast in 1558, were carrying potatoes and some of them washed ashore (Stradley, 2004). The potato was cultivated by the Inca Indians from Peru in about 8,000 B.C. to 5,000 B.C. (Potatoes Goodness Unearthed, 2014). It is believed that the potato arrived in Northern Europe because of Spanish exploration (Mann, 2011). Forty percent of the Irish ate no solid food other than potatoes. In fact, according to Cecil Woodham-Smith, "That cooking any food other than a potato had become a lost art. Women hardly boiled anything but potatoes. The oven had become unknown after the introduction of the potato prior to the Great Starvation." Small land holders could grow potatoes easily ...

The Potato Eaters is Van Gogh’s realist style where he thought of “peasants to be closer to nature than other people”. This began his religious view to capture life’s divinity. It was his first painting, which is a scene of a family at the kitchen table eating supper. His view on the scene was that these people worked all day, then come home to enjoy dinner with the same hard working hands that helped to make the dish, therefore, earning them an honest, genuine meal.
Sweet potatoes date back to 750 B.C. in Peruvian reports, even though archeologists have found evidence showing that sweet potatoes began around 2500-1850 BCE. It is also said that Columbus brought sweet potatoes from England and soon after they were transported here. They became very popular in South and Central America. Later, Columbus brought sweet potatoes back to Spain and there they became popular as well. Nonetheless in recipes it would get confused as to whether it was the white potato or the sweet potato. Not until the late 1740’s was when they began to distinguish a difference. The sweet potato also got more “fame” when England’s John Gerard wrote about the sweet potato in his 1597 Herball or Generall Historie of Plantes. He wrote that the sweet potato “comforts, strengthens, and nourishes the body” and also, “procuring bodily lust”. Gerard’s suggested words could have been the reason for popularity of sweet potatoes during the 16th century.
At first stage, potatoes for all those three products are cleaned to remove stones and sledges before getting peeled, trimmed and sorted. In starch production, potatoes are then rasped in order to disrupt cell walls and release the starch. After this potato juice are separated and pulp is washed with water to flush out milk starch. After removing excessive water and drying the moist starch, the starch is ready to be packed and sent to market (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starch_production). As for chips and French fries production, after the first stage potatoes need to be cut or sliced and washed again. Processed potatoes need further blanching and drying. After deoiling, they enter the last stage in which chips get flavored and French fries are frozen and stored, and eventually packed for sell (http://www.madehow.com/Volume-3/Potato-Chip.html).
