The book, “The Monk and the Riddle” by Randy Komisar, takes the reader through the ins and outs of a business and what one needs to do in order to be successful. Now not only can these lessons be applied to business ventures, but it also teaches important life lessons that can lead someone on the right path when a person encounters any cross roads. One of the major discussions in this book was the point of leadership versus management. These two aspects of business are similar, but also very different in the way they affect a business. Leadership, is the act of leading a group of people within an organization while management is the process of controlling people and directing their efforts in the organization. This distinction is crucial when it comes to producing an effective company that others can get excited about. Leadership always needs to happen first. This can be vital when it comes to starting a company, but also finding yourself in the position of making important company decisions. “Passion and drive are not the same at all. Passion pulls you toward something you cannot resist. Drive pushes you toward something you feel compelled or obligated to do. Once you gain a modicum of self-knowledge, you can express your passion.” (PG????) According to Randy’s deferred life plan, many people found themselves in this cycle when they shouldn’t have to be. An individual may find themselves at first doing what they have to do, their drive. Eventually making that transition into something they want to do, their passion.
