The very fact of the death of someone close to them aroused in all who heard about it, as always, a feeling of delight that he had died and they hadn't.” It is true that when someone we know dies we start to think about our own mortality. It was no different for Peter Ivanovich and his friends when they learned that their friend and colleague, Ivan Ilyich, had passed away. The news is brought to them while they are all at work, and they all seem to consider a sense of relief that it is not them that had died. The second thing that seems to cross their minds is how they might all get promotions, and how his death will impact their lives. Peter realizes that everyone will someday die. Growing up, Ivan lived the life trying to be respectful of others, but always remembering his place in the world. He excelled in school, went on to excel in Law School and then during his career. As he looks back on his life he sees that he was never true to himself. He never accepted his own morals, but instead lived his life by the rules and expectations of others. He lived his life according to what others expected of him. Even though he was awarded great power in his career, he treads carefully to never abuse his power, but instead to follow those who lead by example. He allowed his career to consume him, as he married for the wrong reasons. He married because someone of his statured was expected to get married. He wanted a comfortable life and to be respected. After his wife fell pregnant with their first child she changed and he did not want to spend a lot of time with his family any longer. They became distant, as his career flourished. Ivan was always careful to keep his personal life separate from his professional life. Thi... ... middle of paper ... ...enter the black sack, leads him to doubt that he lived a good live. He begins to doubt himself. He looks back on his life and wonders if he was really a good man. Then he knew he was. He did not allow himself to doubt himself anymore. At that very moment he experienced peace and serenity. That was the moment he felt sad for those he was leaving behind as he faced his death with peace. In conclusion I think the lesson taught by the writer and the death of Ivan Ilych is that we should live our lives the way that we want to, and not the way that others expect us too. I think that the lesson is that we should appreciate those around us, our friends and family, and eliminate those from our lives who does not bring us joy; those who does not add meaning. A life without love is not a life worth living. A life full of regret will haunt you until your dying day.
