The story of In "The Death of Ivan Ilych", was written by Leo Tolstoy around who examines the life of a man, Ivan Ilyich, who would seem to have lived an exemplary life with moderate wealth, high station, and family. By story's end, however, Ivan's life will be shown to be devoid of passion -- a life of duties, responsibilities, respect, work, and cold objectivity to everything and everyone around Ivan. It is not until Ivan is on his death bed in his final moments that he realizes that materialism had brought to his life only envy, possessiveness, and non-generosity and that the personal relationships we forge are more important than who we are or what we own.

Tolstoy uses The Death of Ivan Ilyich to show his readers the negative consequences of living as Ilyich did. One of the worst decisions that Ivan Ilyich made during his lifetime was based on what would monetary benefit him. In others words, he his family and his colleges relate happiness to material possessions only. They could afford to buy big house, expensive cars and fancy clothes which leaded to happiness. But it was just an illusion.

Ivan Ilyich was an intelligent and prosperity Russian high court judge; he never considered that personal relations play an important role in human being. He lived his life without knowing the essentials values of a human being which are compassion, love, honesty, and sincerity, sencibility. He never question to himself about what is more important in life money or personal relations. He never thought about the true of life, it will end one day. Keeping this point in mind, the narrator in this story explains that money would make the journey of life easy. Money can be earned with lost of hard work and, money can buy things, materials, which for a moment make you, feel happy, but it is momentary.

In the other hand, personal relations make the journey of life beautiful and lively. A personal relation has to be maintained and gained with a lot love and affection; personal relations bring true peace and make every moment of life filled with happiness. Money can motivate to an extent, relations will motivate to the fullest, money cannot be carried after end of life, nor relations, but relations will be the one coming to mind when you are in trouble; especially, when at the edge of life.
