What matters about this topic and why would students care?
The search for identity is a universal one. Identity is something we all struggle with, let alone how our identity morphs within different communities. We act differently in front of different crowds. For example in front of parents we may be respectful and quiet, but in front of our peers we could be outgoing, chatty, and rambunctious. Exploring identity has been a topic that continues to be relevant throughout the ages, because the quest for knowledge of self is something every person goes through.
This unit is of particular relevance to young students who are just entering adolescence. The reason for this is that students who are entering adolescence have a fluid sense of identity that they are trying to figure out. It is a period of self discovery and exploration for students, where they try on different identities with different groups to see which one fits best. Therefore the search for identity during this time is incredible important to them.

Originally if you are like me you think we shouldn’t have to adjust who we are, but then you have to take that train of thought farther. If no one accommodated the surrounding community it would be chaos, let alone individuals. For example I am personally a very messy person I believe that it is part of my identity, but if I do not adapt within the community of even just your household no one will want to be around you let alone live with you.
