In Greeley, Colorado, the largest company that resides there is the ConAgra Beef Company. In this company, they grow and slaughter cows and sheep; they sell meat all over the United States. Although livestock animals were grass feed until the nineteenth century, they are now feed about 3000 pounds of grain.
Nathan Meeker founded Greeley in 1860. He helped this city become a major producer of beans and sugar beets. Then when the depression came in the nineteenth century, Greeley's economy fell. In 1906, The Jungle by Uptown Sinclair was released, revealing the working conditions of the slaughterhouses. After this book was released, the investigators confirmed that the claim that the book made was true; as a result, the Congress made food safety legislation. Although the Congress made the food safety legislation, nothing was done about the conditions the workers worked in. In 1906, socialist Upton Sinclair published The Jungle, a book he hoped would awaken the American people to the deplorable conditions of workers in the meat packing industry. Instead, the book sent the country reeling with its description of filthy, rat infested plants, suspect meats processed and sold to consumers, and corrupt government inspectors. President Roosevelt became seriously concerned by the charges brought forth by Mr. Sinclair and determined the only way to protect consumers from unscrupulous business and unsafe food was to enforce regulation.
Most muckraking publications happened in either magazines, such as McClure’s Magazine, or novels, such as The Jungle by Upton Sinclair. Sinclair’s novel revealed the horrors of the meat industry, and the poverty of the workers. Technology in this time period allowed for more crops to be produced. The use of new farm equipment was one of the things that generated more production. Document D shows a combine, a piece of farm equipment that harvests grain, being pulled by many horses. The use of the combine to trigger an increase in agricultural production as shown in Document A. Also with the invention of the grain elevator more farmers had the ability to store grain in bulk. Another technological advancement that developed during this time would be the railroad system. The railroads linked the farms to the big cities as shown in Document B. “Cowboys”, usually in Texas, herded cattle hundreds of miles along cattle trails, such as the Chisholm Trail, and the western trail, to cow towns along railroads. A drawback to the railroads, though, would be the “Robber Barons”, such as C. Vanderbilt, who had monopolistic power over the railroads. Upton Sinclair, the author of The Jungle, wrote this novel to unveil the atrocious working conditions and the contaminated meat in meat-packing workhouses. It was pathos that enabled his book to horrify hundreds of people and to encourage them to take a stand against these meat-packing companies. To obtain the awareness of people, he incorporated a descriptive style to his writing. Ample amounts of imagery, including active verbs, abstract and tangible nouns, and precise adjectives compelled readers to be appalled. At the turn of the twentieth century “Muckraking” had become a very popular practice. This was where “muckrakers” would bring major problems to the publics attention. One of the most powerful pieces done by a muckraker was the book “The Jungle”, by Upton Sinclair. The book was written to show the horrible working and living conditions in the packing towns of Chicago, but what caused a major controversy was the filth that was going into Americas meat. As Sinclair later said in an interview about the book “I aimed at the publics heart and by accident hit them in the stomach.”# The meat packing industry took no responsibility for producing safe and sanitary meat.

We are told who controls the meat market, and then we are taken to a few of their actual chicken farms.
