This past Thursday we were placed into groups and asked to assign creatures with different characteristics into groups, followed by sub-groups. Eventually, our sub-groups were composed of one or two individuals. As a group, we realized that categorizing these creatures into further sub-groups was becoming pointless, because they were all unique, aside from the genders and the four colors. While discussing how categorizing the creatures was becoming pointless, we talked about how categorizing people is becoming meaningless as well. In America, essentially everyone is classified in terms of race in a way. We are all familiar with terms such as Caucasian, African-American, Asian, etc. Most Americans think of these terms as biological or natural classifications; meaning that all people of a certain race share similarities on their D.N.A. that are different and sets that particular race apart from all the other races. However, recent genetic studies show that there’s no scientific basis for the socially popular idea that race is a valid taxonomy of human biological difference. This means that humans are not divided into different groups through genetics or nature. Contrary to scientific studies, social beliefs are reflected through racial realism. Racial realists believe that being of a particular race does not only have phenotypical values (i.e. skin color, facial features, etc.), but also broadens its effects to moral, intellectual and spiritual characteristics.
Throughout the history of mankind there have been numerous cases in which people were victims of oppression or hate. Among these cases the sole reasoning behind this oppression or hate being based on the perception of others. History has shown that society is responsible for labeling groups of people, generally these labels are misleading.
Firstly, they used immigration to show the impact it has on race & ethnic identification. The changes in immigration laws have helped to move the demographics of more than one category. The influx of educated immigrants and the skillsets that they bring with them has helped to push the typology of categories for the groups that they belong to, it has also helped to move the relative positon of those groups in the social order. As a shift in the economic and educational achievements of immigrants are pushing the framework of each category, it is leading to an increase in the heterogeneity between and within the racial & ethnic groups. Changes in immigration is also leading to a change in the social relations within and between groups, as it is leading to increased interracial interactions in schools, workplaces and households. This is shifting the boundaries of this category as well. Secondly, the authors use multiracialism or hybridity, which is the ability of individuals to fit into multiple categories. It is seen that over time individuals are identifying themselves with multiple racial & ethnic categories, this is due to increased similarities between shared attributed by different groups. In this world we are constantly being categorized by our race and ethnicity, and for many people it’s hard to look beyond that. Even though in the past many stood up for equality and to stop racism and discrimination, it still occurs. In this nation of freedom and equality, there are still many people who believe that their race is superior to others. These beliefs are the ones that destroy our nation and affect the lives of many. The people affected are not limited by their age group, sex, social status, or by their education level. Their beliefs can cause them to attack other groups verbally or in silence and even reaching to the point of violence. All of this occurs because we can’t be seen as a “people”, but rather like “species” that need to be classified. An example of racism due to race and ethnicity as categories of identity is seen in the article written by Daphne Eviatar entitled “Report Finds Widespread Discrimination against Latino Immigrants in the South.” In this particular case white supremacy groups discriminate Hispanics that are both legal and illegal in the southern states of America, portraying several theoretical concepts.
Social categorization is described as the natural classification process, which people use in placing others into some social groups (Abrams & Hogg, 2006). Typically, based on the human nature, social categorization occurs instinctively, without even the people’s awareness. As social creatures, people are sure to interact with others in different communal settings. As a result, they end up meeting with people of all categories ranging from different color, size, gender, shape, and sexuality among others (Ambady & Skowronski, 2008). Race categories are often used as ethnic intensifiers, with the aim of justifying the exploitation of one group by another. Race is an idea that has become so fixed in American society that there is no room for open-mindedness when challenging the idea of racial categories. Bobbie Harro states in “The cycle of socialization” (2000), “No one brings us a survey, in the womb, inquiring which gender, class, religion, sexual orientation, cultural group, ability status, or age we might want to be born. These identities are ascribed to us at birth through no effort or decision or choice of our own” (p.16). I was born into a system, just like everyone else, where I was judged and labeled due to the social categories that I identify with. What I have experienced throughout my schooling has shaped and molded my sense of self and the way that I view myself in terms of my gender and race/ethnicity. What it seems that she fails to realize, is that categories such as this exist for a reason. We as human beings need distinctions such as natural and cultural in order to better organize our collective thoughts. Regardless of what she might think, categorizations are made for a reason, nor are they made solely with the intention of benefiting specific interest groups. She seems to be suggesting that we need to abandon all our basic ideas and start looking at everything her way, which quite simply is not worth the effort. Throughout the Race, Ethnicity, Class and Gender class, we discussed about race, ethnicity, class and gender and how they are involved in our lives today. I read different articles under each of the topics in the class, answered questions and discussed them in our follow-up class the week after. In each of our discussions, I’ve learned something new. Everywhere I go race, ethnicity, class and gender are all around me and there’s nothing I can do to change it, just accept it. Some people don’t know the difference between race and ethnicity, but I do. Race is biology and ethnicity is culture. Race is your physical appearance like what you look like such as skin color, your DNA, etc., and ethnicity is your language such as Spanish, Chinese, French, etc.
This rejection of roles has been documented in several novels, including Octavia Butler’s Kindred. Kindred exhibits three types of role denial as they pertain to race in both the novel and reality: denial of a label placed by society, denial of label contradictory of what is desired, and denial of a label given by your own community. All three ways are still present today as the fight to stop human categorization continues due to its negative impact on the citizens, communities, and country as a whole. The end of this will be through continuation of denying the labels that are wrongfully placed on us in order to discourage future labeling, and every person should take the liberty to stop categorizing people and refute the labels placed on them to make this country accepting of all
