When working on an assignment in a group it is best to set roles for each team member. That is a process called Group Dynamics. Each team member would have a different function in each group. One member would take the Devil’s Advocate role. That position is for a person in the group that can never agree with any of the members ideas’. It helps the group by allowing them to see what it is like having to deal and work with a difficult team member during the assignment. Another member would take the role of the Listener. Their position would be to sit back quietly, keeping their ideas to themselves and allow the other members to discuss their ideas among the group. I like coming up with many different types of ideas in a group like the Idea Generator. I think that role can help others when they do not have the understanding of the assignment and could lead their minds in the right direction of the main topic to come up with their own ideas. Being a Helper in a group is a positive position to me because there is nothing like helping others in areas that help is needed in. It shows that I have understanding of the roles and that I am willing to help improve the assignment the best way that I can. I also do not like conflicts between people so I believe I can connect with the Mediator role. I have always been a problem solver and try to help others understand there is always a positive solution to all their problems. I believe having a happy team will help the members work better together to get the job done on time. When I am working in a group I do not like to procrastinate, so I can connect with the Decision Maker role easily. Within my placement organisation, staff members will generally work as part of a team as well as having an individual role. For the team to be efficient all members must know their own role within the team, liaise with each other, and look to improve individual strengths and weaknesses. This collaboration helps to build a successful team, built on trust and effective communication.
It provides a great opportunity to see how others work, and I can learn from their work processes because each member has different ideas, skills and knowledge. Group work also provides me with a good chance to collaborate with others and experience challenging work.
I work well in group situations. I always try to encourage all members to participate and contribute. It is interesting to note that in most situations, I tend to be one of the group leaders. I do have a strong personality. Yet I try not to come across as controlling or bossy.

In order to evaluate my role within the group, it is important to identify what makes a group. A group must firstly consist of more than three members, “Two members have personal relationships; with three or more there is a change in quality” of the personal relationship. (Bion 1961, p26) The group must have a common purpose or a goal in order to succeed. Having now completed my group work task, I can look back and reflect upon the process that my group went through to get to the presentation end point.
Because I see myself as versatile in what I can bring to the group, I often take whatever position has not been filled. Using this report, I can see that I need to be more open with whatever I may need from my group: constructive criticism, a sounding board, support. Being more open with what I need and how I can work with the group to see all group needs met, we can be more efficient and we will all feel more fulfilled. In a group, my creativity and perception can help with coming up with ideas that will impress the judge of our project, and my organization is always a welcome addition when it comes to preparing and making our project. When planning, I must keep in mind my tendency to be impractical with implementation and scope, not to mention resources available.
A group can only be called a team if the members are actively working together toward a common goal. A team must have the capability to set goals, make decisions, solve problems, and share responsibilities. For a team to be successful, trust must be earned between its members by being consistent and reliable (Temme & Katzel, 2005). When more than one person is working on a particular task, inconsistent views or opinions commonly arise. People come from different backgrounds and live through different life experiences therefore, even when working towards a common goal, they will not always see eye to eye. Major conflict that is not dealt with can devastate a team or organization (Make Conflict Work, 2008). In some situations, conflict can be more constructive than destructive. Recognizing the difference between conflict that is constructive to the team and conflict that is destructive to the team is important. Trying to prevent the conflict is not always the best way to manage conflict when working within a team setting. Understanding conflict, what causes it, and how to resolve conflict effectively, should consume full concentration.
When working on a group project, there are certain skills that are required to make sure that the tasks are being carried out smoothly. With that in mind, it is critical to keep an open line of communication as well as an understanding of the other individuals in the group. The following scenario is of a group project I was a part of that had a breakdown in the two points expressed above.
When I am feeling good and working on something that I know how to do with confidence then I will tend to want to work on my own. The reason for that position is to help ensure that others don’t get to rock the boat or get in the way of having something done with confidence and lower stress. I would always prefer to work in a group or team environment because this is how the real world functions, and it provides a very effective way to draw on the strengths and talents of the other team members to have a better end product. The well working and properly functioning team environment also allows for a potentially less stressful environment by everyone working together with various talents and skills that can be contributed to the betterment of the project. This model also allows for the team members to help move the project along by brainstorming ideas and input from all members when a glitch or unforeseen problem presents its self and could have a negative impact on the outcome of the project.
Group work is good because it teaches me communication skills and patience. When you work with peers you also get to see different views of different subjects which really helps you to think more about what we have learnt. When I read the responses in the discussion forums of my peers sometimes I am blown away by how different individuals think and see things. Working with peers forces you to think harder and work hard. Good competition is great for the learning environment.

In developing teams it is a good idea to have a basic sense of the various stages that occur when establishing a team and having awareness throughout the stages helps leadership understand the reasons for team members behaviors that occurred throughout each stage and helps guide these members to moving onto the next stage.
Each member is comfortable in finding their place and can feel a sense of belonging within the team. As a team member, I portrayed the roles of a team player and a researcher. I may not be the brain of the group, but I was very eager to help and became a reliable member that follows-through on tasks to resolve conflicts. Also, I became a researcher too, at some point. I formulated various questions and gathered the information and data from the group. According to Sussex (2013), a researcher “is always asking a question and then finding their own answers.” She also stated in her blog that a team player is someone that the team could rely on because they are eager to help and resolve a conflict in a very calm way. In a team-oriented setting, everyone contributes to how well the group succeeds overall. You work with fellow members of the group to complete the work that needs to be done. Having the right people in the correct roles is an important factor in measuring the success of a team, where you are united with the other members to complete the main goals. Every group is made up of definite strengths and weaknesses. Our team's 3-5 major strengths necessary to work accordingly consist of Informer, Summarizer, Orienter, Piggy-Backer, and Encourager. One of our strengths as a team is that we get input from everyone involved. Every member of our team is a leader in some way. Part of being a good leader is knowing how important it is to receive the best ideas from each member of their team. We attend group meetings where we discuss any challenges, issues, and problems. At these meetings, we often exchange ideas or brainstorm new ones with each other and come up with the best and most creative team solutions as potential answers to those perceived problems.
Working together with other people for an assignment can be a challenging task in some cases but luckily, I worked well with my group members. The decisions we made were anonymous although we paced ourselves individually when it came to completing our separate parts of the essay. As a group I believe that we connected well on an interpersonal level as all four of us were able to make alterations to any problem together . Furthermore, we did not give each other a chance to get angry at one another as we knew that this would only cause conflict that would disrupt our flow as a group. There was an equal divide in the amount of work that we all did; our contributions were fair and no one was lacking behind. In addition, my group members were great at keeping each other informed if one of us were not able to attend a group meeting; emails were sent out informing us what we missed and ideas that were formulated. Everyone in my group worked according to deadlines and in synchronization with each other; we did not have to nag anyone to complete work or wait on a member to complete their task.
