In the article, “Students Cheat Themselves Out of an Education,” by Daniel Ross, Ross argues that students who cheat do not think of their consequences, because they are cheating to succeed due to all the pressure they have upon them to excel in school. Many students cheat for a good grade, not because they are lazy or unintelligent. I agree that cheating is going to happen, and there is no way to stop it because students are pressured into getting good grades in college. Being in colleges is already tuff on students. We spend multiple hours studying and doing homework for at least four classes, which takes up a large amount of our time. In this case this is bad. Cheating in college is serious because you can become expelled, loose your credibility with your professor, and there is a chance that it will be placed on your transcript. Professors should be more strict on how they are preventing cheating in their classrooms. Since technology is giving students more ways to cheat, all technology needs to be excluded in the classroom. Since copying information off the internet is one of the newer trends in plagiarism teachers need to take action. One thing they can do is stay present in the classroom if there is an exam or a quiz. By staying in the classroom you will be able to have an eye on each student so you will know if they are cheating or not. Another method to prevent cheating is to have open book exams. If you give open book exams you can really test your students knowledge on the material. Instead of giving easy questions out of the book, make the questions difficult, that way the student will have the answers right in front of them. Almost every student has cheated at one point or another for some reason they use to justify it and they could be any one of these forms of cheaters. Although all these types of cheaters will attempt to rationalize their cheating with various excuses and reasons there is no real justification. They all know it is the wrong thing to do, but will cheat anyways as they can get away with it and it will create the illusion of greater intelligence for themselves and that is a problem for the youth of America. It will make students learn to cheat better instead of actually learning the material assigned to them, resulting in a less intelligent generation.
From plagiarism to dishonesty, many high school teenagers cheat just to get a good grade in a class or they simply are bad at that particular subject. They cheat on tests, quizzes, and even on big projects. No matter the circumstance, if you are ever to be caught, you should be served with the toughest of consequences. You should not be trusted. You should have any second chances. After all, even if you don’t get caught for cheating, you are not learning anything the class has to offer.

For the student, there is either a social or an economic incentive to be gained by cheating [MacGregor, 2012]. However, cheating, more specifically, cheating during exams or in graded assignments gives the students who cheat an unfair advantage over those who remain honest and study hard to excel in the same examination or assignment. Grades are reflection of knowledge and competence gained through learning. Therefore, acts of academic dishonesty undermine the validity of student learning. This, in turn, has effect on academic system in two ways – 1. It reflects poorly on the academic standard or quality of education being imparted by the institution from where the cheating student earned his/her grades and 2. It also interferes with faculty’s ability to correctly diagnose gaps in student learning for the purpose of both re-teaching current students and re-designing instruction for future students [Passow, 2006].

According to Donald McCabe, who conducted the Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey, study, the Internet is partly to blame. The Internet makes plagiarism very simple. In-class cheating has also gone high technology. Experts say students who cheat are not just scribbling tiny crib sheets anymore. Cheating on academic work is a serious issue that most students admit to doing at some point in their academic career. Elite students are surprisingly the culprits of cheating, but hide it well. (Romm, para 5) Cheating is such a large issue that “70% of students from a sample of 1,800 from nine campuses said they had cheated at least once during their college careers.” (Schneider, para 9) Students cheat on academic work because of different, ongoing pressures in their lives. Understanding the student’s motives and pressures are essential to preventing cheating from occurring in the future. Students cheat for different reasons specific to them regarding their priorities, pressures and because of how easy it has become. Even though eliminating cheating will not happen, there are actions that educational professionals can and should take to prevent most of it from happening so often. Therefor cheating problems are minimized and have a positive impact on the student’s education and understanding of concepts.
School systems today are so lenient in their rules, guidelines and consequences; thus causing cheating, copying or forgeries to be frequently used. Many students take advantage of copying someone else's work whenever they are given the chance. Other times, students will simply have someone else do their work and turn it in as their own, not realizing the effects this behavior can create. This creates a lack of creativity, no sense of responsibility and the students will never acquire new knowledge. These practices of cheating, copying and forgery by students are unethical and should be brought to the surface whenever possible.

Schools can implement harsher punishments for cheating, they can embarrass the cheater by publishing their name or even worse, they can expel them from school but even with those potential consequences, students are still cheating because they are getting away with it. Even with tools used now to catch plagiarism, no program is fool proof. If more than 50% of students admit to cheating but very few get caught, it’s impossible to completely stop students from cheating. While there may be many ways to curb cheating in some students who are mature and focused on their educations and learning the course material, these same methods may not work on a cheater.
