Daniel Levitin, a neuroscientists explains why students and employers shouldn’t listen to
music while working or that they should stop listening to music while they’re working after
reading his article. In his article Levitin states many reasons why people should stop listening to
music while working.

students would most likely protest against Westwood because students believe that listening to
music while working helps them focus, helps them get their work done, and how listening to

Music therapy is not just for group or one on one sessions though. Music can also be used in the workplace as a calming therapy. Music that is played in the workplace can have various benefits. In undemanding or repetitive jobs it can improve the overall productivity. Music being played where physically ambitious jobs it can improve performance of employees. Music being used in the workplace as a soothing therapy can also improve morale. Morale is the confidence, enthusiasm and discipline of a person or group at a particular time. Yet another advantage of music playing in a work environment is that employees are more inclined to collaborate with one another and be supportive of one another. (Notecard 15)
Before addressing the need for music instruction in our schools I would like to briefly examine the need for education of any kind. Education is a means of making sure our society has a given set of knowledge. The set of knowledge we perceive ourselves as needing changes based on our surroundings and the issues we are dealing with. In American education's early history we perceived ourselves as needing a set of knowledge that included a common language and common view of history, as well as knowledge of those things with which we would interact every day. Music in my life is really has become a positive thing. I get to relax when I am stressed out, or it gets me pumped up before I do something that would be hard for me or that would need a lot of work for me to do. If I am studying, I would listen to music that is calming with lyrics or with a very good beat such as dubstep. The essay I read suggested that people of low intelligence/class (i.e. teenagers) use “junk” music to try and drown out their supposedly harsh reality. The author also suggests that the more intelligent people in the world do not listen to loud music because the decibel level at which you listen to music somehow indicates your intelligence. I cannot agree with that statement because I have talked to my friends and aquaintences and they told me that music helps to lift their spirits and some even said that music helps them to cope with their reality. In addition, studies have shown that some people who listen to music while they study actually do better on the test the next day, because the music relaxes them. In the aforementioned essay, the author also mentions the “two slack-jawed young assistants.” This was quite obviously stating that the repairmen were of lower social standing, and that the “junk” music they were “blasting” was emphasizing their low class.

There have been many studies done to find how music influences a child’s development. The College Entrance Examination Board discovered that students who took music appreciation classes had higher verbal and math scores than those who did not take the classes. “Recent studies show that being involved in music classes makes it easier to learn other subjects and improve skills in other classrooms” (Brown, “The Benefits of Music Education”). A lot of people tend to overlook how much music education has an impact on the success of a student. Because of this, schools should be required to offer fine arts and music classes as electives for the students. Not only will this improve the students test scores, but it will also give the students a broader imagination and more creativity in and out of the classroom. In a lot of schools, fine arts and musical classes are the first to go when there are budget cuts. “Seventy-one percent of the nation’s fifteen thousand school districts have cut instructional hours spent on music and other subjects” (“State of the arts: should music and art classes be brushed aside”). Not only is it affecting the teachers who have specialized in the study of fine arts, it is affecting all of the students and parents who are actively involved in these programs. “Johnson, professor of music education and music therapy and associate dean of the School of Fine Arts at KU, found jumps of twenty-two percent in English test scores and twenty percent in math scores at elementary schools with superior music education” (Lynch “Music Boosts Test Scores”). With that being said, schools should be required to offer music and fine arts classes as an elective for their students.
Many public schools offer music education as part of their curriculum. Although these classes are required, many schools choose not to allocate enough money into the music programs in favor of better scores on standard tests. Recently there have been many strides to strengthen the importance of music education.
Even when children learn music they able to listen, sing, dance, create movement. Listening to music draw out emotions, and playing music can be just like communicating emotions. If there came a school where there was absolutely no music allowed, the school would burn down in chaos. Some may think that music during school may be distracting and won’t allow the kids to study, but it actually does the exact opposite for most students. Based on this article from St. Viator High School, many people think that music takes stress off their mind by focusing on something else, such as work (“Student’s Thoughts”).
