I’ve been working in retail since I was 16 years old and I have encounter myself with a lot of disagreements. At one of my most recent jobs my manager was very traditional. He wanted his employees to have the same beliefs as him, due to his religion and where he came from. Wanting us not to be very social with the customers that came in the store. After my first week of working there my manager noticed how talkative, and helpful I was, and called to my attention. The world of today is a relatively primitive one, even with every advancement that humanity has accomplished we remain primitive in this aspect. There has been progress, even as slow in comparison to that of todays, it is progress.The ignorances and other human flaws are still very existent within every society, regardless of the boundaries between them be it geographical or cultural. Stereotypes and misconceptions exist in the modern society. Stereotypes arise when there is a single radical group who are accepted as the representation of their apparent subculture. Then the ignorant and misinformed take these “representatives’” behavior as a generalization of the entire group. While the less common misconception is made by some incomprehensible anomaly where an entire assumption is based around a single social group, that has never even proved to be true. There is a stereotype that is attached with the College educated community, they are believed to be almost guaranteed success. The fact that they have a degree in their respective field has built a stereotype of the “successful ones.”

Choosing a college major is often a difficult and distressing task for many students. Most individuals attend college to obtain a career that will lead to wealth and success. When deciding on a major, students consider their main interests as well as the opportunities offered by particular fields of study. Many of these young adults, however, never consider that the decisions they make can determine their "status" at a university and can be the source of many generalizations by peers. Especially at the State University, certain majors are believed to be more credible than others. For example, those found in the fields of mathematics and science are perceived to be highly difficult and time consuming, and therefore command a great deal of respect in the college arena. On the other hand, majors found in Arts and Letters and Business are deemed to be quite a bit easier, less stressful, and as a result are often scorned. Because of these stereotypes, students of Arts and Letters and Business command much less respect in the university and receive much less credit for academic accomplishments. In order to eliminate unfounded stereotypes, all majors at Notre Dame should be equally regarded because they reflect a student's interests and strengths rather than define his or her identity and intelligence.
Besides that, the negative stereotype that depicts women as incapable, less intelligent, and uneducated adversely hinders job opportunities for women including the process of hiring, promotions, and wages. These negative perceptions about women are implanted in our society, causing potential employers to have the same stereotypical perspectives about women, and not wanting to hire or promote them to a higher position. In the modern era, stereotypes seem to be the ways people justify and simplify the society. Actually, “[s]tereotypes are one way in which we ‘define’ the world in order to see it” (Heilbroner 373). People often prejudge people or objects with grouping them into the categories or styles they know, and then treat the types with their experiences or just follow what other people usually do, without truly understand what and why. Thus, all that caused miscommunication, argument or losing opportunities to broaden the life experience. Stereotypes are usually formed based on an individual’s appearance, race, and gender that would put labels on people.
In the video, there was a substitute teacher who was clearly a new face to the students in the class. He laid down the law of his classroom and began to take attendance. When he began, he pronounced the students names quite oddly. It is unknown if the teacher was honestly trying to pronounce their names right or just doing it for the fun of it. When the students didn’t respond to the incorrect pronunciations of their names, the teacher got really mad. He even got to the point where he had to send one kid down to the principal’s office and explain to him the “wrong things” that he did. The teacher was swiping papers off of desks and breaking clipboards in half, just to show how upset he was.
In a growing world, relying on education and intelligence, judgments in a social environment are still continuously based off of appearance. A study of the importance of outer looks was produced through a TV game show. Contestants fought to answer questions correctly to improve their personal score. At the end of the game, the player with the highest score was asked to eliminate a team member. Although many times an unattractive player would have higher scores and could be more beneficial than another teammate, only 27% of unattractive members were chosen to advance to the next round (Belot, Bhaskar, and van de Ven 852-853). When society overlooks qualities and characteristics of high value for looks, discrimination conquers.
I feel that doing what you say you will, and treating others as you want to be treated are principles that should not only be looked at as great strengths but as internal values that convey credibility. When people trust you and know they can come to you without judgment, it offers them a sense of security and peace.
The saying, “the customer is always right” isn’t always necessarily true. Most of the time, the sales associated is correct. However, it is still important to treat costumers with respect, even when they are wrong. Another important skill to have in order to survive retail is to remain patient with costumers. It can be frustrating when a customer messes up a display or leaves clothes on the dressing room floor. Dealing with grumpy customers can also be challenging. When it comes to preconceived notions there are many diversity factors, including ethnicity, race, culture, religion, gender, and age, that can all contribute to the propensity of stereotyping in the workplace. Stereotyping can cause many negative effects, it can cause people in a workplace to treat others or groups a certain way, that is because they are based on preconceived notions about that person. I personally try my best not to stereotype anyone I come in contact with, however, at one point I did stereotype an older worker. I was raised by parents who always stressed for us to be respectful and honest people. We were taught the rights and the wrongs of life. We were taught not only to conduct ourselves in this manner at home, but to also carry these beliefs into the work world and the world in general. But, I am aware that I am human and have made mistakes in my life that have questioned my ethics. Then again, there have been many experiences, personal and work related to where I struggled.
