One of his most famous paintings, Starry Night, is a perfect representation of this Post-Impressionistic style of painting. With its swirling colors and lines, Starry Night, incorporates not just the color and light that is found in the earlier works of these painters, but it shows how forms and feelings also came into play. "Waves and swirls" were applied so thickly in this piece that the paint itself cast shadows. His heavy brushstrokes and vivid colors portray the night sky as crazy and chaotic and the village below as peaceful and serene. The historical significance of Starry Night mirrors the events taking place during this era of modernity.

One of Constable's first important paintings was Dedham Vale of 1802 and the Dedham Vale of 1828. These paintings "repeat intrinsically the composition of that compact gem - like scene" (Reynolds,21). The Dedham Vale of 1828 was painted from a topographical point of view. "The painting shows a view from the hill bordering the Stour Valley. Constable loved the view from the Stour Valley so much, that he drew from almost the same spot in several sketches and painted at least three versions in oil."

Monet's use of color along with use of intricate brush strokes and composition is outstanding. The vast variations of brush strokes and color placement techniques are what make his work so unique and individual. Grand Canal, Venice, 1908 is a prime example of Monet's talents in these areas. The structure of the painting is very loose. There are few hard lines in the composition that represents solid structure.

Vincent Van Gogh is considered the greatest Dutch painter, and highly influenced the 20th century art. In the era of the impressionism, Van Gogh was a post-impressionist painter whose work, notable for its beauty, emotion and color. One of his most famous paintings that caught my attention was the starring night over the Rhone and the café Terrace on the place du forum, Arles, at night. The reasons why the two paintings from Van Gogh caught my attention was that it has a lot of meaning and representation. For example, The starring night over the Rhone has a big river and on top you can see a lot of beautiful stars, for me that represents the beauty of nature and all the bright colors he uses on his paintings represents his passion towards painting.

They used short sharp brushwork similar to the Post-Impressionist painters and I feel that Post-Impressionism seems to be almost like a more extreme version of Impressionism. However of the two styles I think that I prefer the Post-Impressionist style as I feel it is freer, bright and shows more emotion. I especially like the long broken and sometimes swirly brushwork which gives everyday scenes a more interesting and exciting feel .The use of bright and vibrant colours brings the paintings to life and creates a range of moods .The artist which I like the most is Van Gogh as I feel his artwork is really quite outstanding .He creates whole new and exciting visions of his interpretations on the things he sees. Not only did he create vivid and intense paintings but also he could express his moods and feelings through them.
