What is the purpose of fiction?
The single most important thing that differentiates us humans from any other species of animals out in the world is imagination. Every other living organism besides humans lives by the status quo or an existing state of affairs, and that is to survive regardless of any circumstances. Lions are out to hunt because if they don’t they will starve and not be able to feed their cubs. Bumblebees and butterflies both have distinct roles in the environment and that is to pollinate flowers. Each individual organism has their own unique characteristics and niches in the environment but they lack the ability to imagine, to look into the future and to create scenarios in their minds that could never possibly happen. It demonstrates its purpose. George Lucas did not create Star Wars for any other purpose besides entertainment and portraying this unimaginable story of wars fought between species galaxies far far away. The purpose of fiction is to entertain us and to help us express our imagination by creating fictional stories and characters of numerous traits and characteristics that will appeal to the reader. However, fiction can also be an escape for other people. It could serve as something for people to fall back on and read to get their minds off of some hard times they may be enduring in their life. Fiction does a phenomenal job of captivating the reader and allowing them to focus only on what is happening in the story. It gets your mind to think and constantly ask questions about what happens next. Since the stories told are not necessarily real it can sometimes be incredibly difficult to actually foresee what will happen next in the story. Fictions main purpose is to portray the imaginative thoughts going on in our heads. It excites the reader and allows for the creation of stories that, without fiction, would never have been told.
