Standardized tests have been a big political issue in today's society. Standardized tests are used to measure a student's performance in a subject. In a standardized test all answers are the same. Standardized tests should not be required because tests cost a lot of money, narrow the curriculum, and they are an unreliable measure of student achievement. Standardized test cost too much money. Opposing people such as, Derrick Meador say, “Common Core standards will decrease the cost states pay for the test development”(Meador). Since the NCLB act(No Child Left Behind Act) Common Core Standards have increased causing the price for standardized tests to rise. Second , according to Andrew Ujifusa, “Standardized testing regiments cost states some 1.7 billion a year over all, a quarter of one percent of total k-12 spending in the United States”(Ujifusa). First, Derrick Meador has objected, “accompanied by a set of established Standards or instructional framework which provide teachers with a guidance for what and when something needs to be taught”(Meador). Tests should not tell a teacher on what they need to teach the class. In fact, tests cause teachers to “teach to the test”, “this practice can hinder a student's overall learning potential… this practice only continues to increase”(Meador). This way of teaching causes kids to get bored and not enjoy the class. Teaching to the test lacks creativity and fun in a classroom. Furthermore, Phillip Harris says, “the tests don’t measure creativity critical thinking, resilience, motivation, persistence, curiosity, endurance, reliability, enthusiasm, empathy, self awareness, self- discipline”(Harris). Tests should be on these topics because we are going to use these skills more in our everyday life.
