Islam, a monotheistic religion, is the second largest religion in the world. It is the fastest growing religion with roughly 1.6 billion followers. Islam professes that there is only one God (Allah.) A person who accepts Islam is called a Muslim. The Arabic word islam means “submission” because the Muslims are submitting themselves to God. The religion is based on the revelations that the prophet Muhammad received in the early seventh century. Muslims believe Muhammad is the last prophet of Allah, the first being Adam. Muslims do not think that Muhammad is the founder of Islam, but is the restorer of the faith.

The angel was the same angel that visited Moses and some of the other prophets. The angel spoke to Muhammad revealing many messages from God, which was written down in the Qur’an, the Islamic holy book. Gabriel told Muhammad to go out and preach about Allah. He began leading different tribes, as many tribes wanted to join with him. The Makkah leaders were angry and gathered together an army. They invaded Medina at night. They had a large army, but kept losing the battles. Finally, they had to give up. In 628, Makkah signed a peace treaty with Muhammad, but violated the treaty two years later. Muhammad and his followers peacefully took over Makkah. Muhammad said he forgave everyone for all their wrongdoings. Two years after the treaty, almost all tribes accepted Islam.
