I have chosen to focus this essay on the level of sport that schools provide. Not every school offers enough, and I will demonstrate why some need to do more to offer greater opportunities. I will also compare levels offered by both the state and private systems and make recommendations as to where more could be done. My central theme is that through sport, the value of teamwork, leadership and the enhancement of physical and mental health can be promoted in children as well as them being encouraged to develop a healthy competitive edge, a valuable and much required quality in the preparation for adult life.

When children feel accepted by the rest of the team, they report more enjoyment of activities, higher levels of self-esteem and are less likely to avoid participating in sport. Many experts believe that sport friendships are different to other friendships that children have, because in sports you support each other more and really get to learn one another’s character, strength and weaknesses. This is developed through the desire to succeed and working together for the same outcome. On the other hand, this can also have a negative effect, if you make a mistake that could have won the game, you might feel that you have let your friends down. Lessons can be learnt from this, such as good sportsman-ship and developing your games. Sport also helps team bonding, bringing people together through sport. If schools started teaching sport from an early age, they will be more developed sports men and women by the time they are adults. Studies done in schools reveal a connection between playing in a team and develop leadership qualities. People involved in sports develop a team mindset that is put in use in the workplace and social situations. Children who participate in sports are influenced to take their education more seriously and lower the risk of dropping out of school, because they have the desire to
