Splendor in the Grass and Romeo and Juliet

Splendor in the Grass, a romantic film written by William Inge and directed by Elia Kazan, and Romeo and Juliet, a romantic film based off the play written by William Shakespeare and directed by Franco Ziffirelli are both films that share some similarities and differences when it comes to the a romantic film. One can argue that both films themes of love are both represented similarly through their plots.

Romeo and Juliet, a classic and a work of Shakespeare that almost everyone in an English class may have heard, is one of the most iconic and famous plays ever written. Romeo and Juliet being a play written almost four centuries ago, any adaptation of the play sure has a large role to take on successfully portraying the story of the two lovers. The story of the film takes place in Verona, Italy, where two clans, the Montogue and the Capulet are continuing their long feud. A fight breaks out in the middle of the town square between the two clans and ends by the Prince and gives a fair warning to both clans saying that any more disturbances will have consequences. After the fight between the two clans leaving one Montogue injured, the Capulet hosts a ball where the two lovers, Romeo who is a Montogue and Juliet, who is a Capulet, meet.

They meet at the ball and instantly become obsessed with eachother. After they meet they pronounce their love for eachother during the famous balcony scene and get married in secrecy with the aid of Juliets Nurse and Friar Lawrence. After they got married they believed everything was going well, that was until another fight broke out between their clans where Juliets cousin, Tybalt, fights Mercutio of the Montague who take...

... that.

In conclusion, both films were without a doubt emotional works that truly set aside the non story book ending. The passion that we see in Romeo and Juliet from Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting exemplifies the meaning of the tragedy of Shakespeares play. Romeo and Juliet and Splendor in the Grass shared the similar theme that was well presented with the story they told.
