I have known I wanted to pursue a career in the medical field since I was young. I was not quite sure what job I specifically wanted, however I have knew I had to set my goals high. Fast forward a few years, and I am about to be sophomore in high school. I was trying to make the varsity basketball team and I was doing everything I could to impress my coach, until the day my life was changed forever. I tore my anterior cruciate ligament in my knee the summer before my sophomore year. At the time I felt like my entire life was over, but that was not the case at all. Although this experience closed some doors, it opened so many more that have truly made me the person I am today.
A dear friend of mine suffers from Crohn’s disease. This is an inflammatory bowel disease that caused her much pain in the past few years. During our senior year of high school, she had a very serious flare up. She weighed only eighty-five pounds and could hardly eat an entire meal due to the severity of her condition. One day she asked me to go with her to an appointment at an imaging center where she would receive and ultrasound of her abdomen. That day is when I realized I wanted to become a diagnostic sonographer. So I went home and did my research. At the time I had a scholarship to attend OSU-OKC. However, when I saw this program that was partnered with Oklahoma City Community College I immediately spoke with my parents and made the decision to complete my semester at OSU-OKC and transfer to OCCC so that I could apply to this program. It is fast-paced and thorough. It worked out quite well, because I was able to complete all of the prerequisites before the application period. I could not turn down this opportunity. ... are many ways to succeed academically, but at the root of it all there must be a genuine desire to learn. That means doing whatever it takes to fully understand and gain knowledge. Whether it is finding a tutor, reading a chapter five or six times, or just simply asking for help, academic success is solely based on the use of resources to their full potential.
More than anything I want to be successful. I fully comprehend that I have been given many opportunities that are helping me to achieve that. I would love nothing more than to be successful in this program and accomplish all that I have worked for. I want to become a part of this profession because I believe it is the best non-invasive imaging procedure in healthcare today. I am thankful for the opportunity to apply to this program and, if given the chance, I will excel and do my best in every way possible.
