Do you believe in slavery? Sojourner Truth was born into slavery in Swartekill, New York in 1797. Before Sojourner was born, she had many siblings which were all sold away in auctions by the time she and her little brother, Peter were born. Sojourner and Peter were the only children left, along with their parents James and Elizabeth Baumfree. The Baumfree family was owned by the Hardenbergh's. At the age of nine, Sojourner and her younger brother Peter were both sold in the auction to different families, that's when her journey away from her parents began. When Sojourner was sold to the Neely family, who beat her and treated her badly, she was all alone and had remembered that her mom always told her to rely on God when she was sad or scared so that's what she did. One day, a great man by the name of Martin Schryver who happened to know Sojourner's father came and bought her from the Neely's. After about a year of living with the Schryver's, she was sold to one of their church families, the Dumonts. Later on in life, the Dumonts claimed Robert as one of their own slaves and that's when Sojourner became pregnant, that's when the thought of freedom entered her mind.
