Do you believe in slavery? Sojourner Truth was born into slavery in Swartekill, New York in 1797. Before Sojourner was born, she had many siblings which were all sold away in auctions by the time she and her little brother, Peter were born. Sojourner and Peter were the only children left, along with their parents James and Elizabeth Baumfree. The Baumfree family was owned by the Hardenbergh's. At the age of nine, Sojourner and her younger brother Peter were both sold in the auction to different families, that's when her journey away from her parents began. When Sojourner was sold to the Neely family, who beat her and treated her badly, she was all alone and had remembered that her mom always told her to rely on God when she was sad or scared so that's what she did. One day, a great man by the name of Martin Schryver who happened to know Sojourner's father came and bought her from the Neely's. After about a year of living with the Schryver's, she was sold to one of their church families, the Dumonts. After spending a lot of time with Robert, they fell in love. Later on in life, the Dumonts claimed Robert as one of their own slaves and that's when Sojourner became pregnant, that's when the thought of freedom entered her mind. Sojourner ran away from slavery before the Emancipation act was published, and decided to change her name to Sojourner Truth. This name bares great meaning, because she intended on telling the truth to all people about slavery. Sojourner also wanted a religious name, and she felt that this name would best suit her purpose.
Sojourner Truth, Frederick Douglass, and Olaudah Equiano all have extremely interesting slave narratives. During their lives, they faced plenty of racist discrimination and troubling moments. They were all forced into slavery at an awfully young age and they all had to fight for their freedom. In 1797, Truth was born into slavery in New York with the name of Isabella Van Wagener. She was a slave for most of her life and eventually got emancipated. Truth was an immense women’s suffrage activist. She went on to preach about her religious life, become apart of the abolitionist movement, and give public speeches. Truth wrote a well-known personal experience called An Account of an Experience with Discrimination, and she gave a few famous speech called Ain’t I a Woman? and Speech at New York City Convention. In 1818, Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey was born into slavery in Tuckahoe, Maryland. When he was older, he made an escape plan by disguising himself as a sailor and going on a train to New York. When he became a free man, he changed his name to Frederick Douglass and married Anna Murray. He went on to give many speeches and he became apart of the Anti-Slavery Society. Douglass wrote his story From My Bondage and My Freedom and became a publisher for a newspaper. In 1745, Olaudah Equiano was born in Essaka, Nigeria. Equiano and his sister were both kidnapped and put on the middle passage from Africa to Barbados and then finally to Virginia. He eventually saved enough money to buy his freedom and got married to Susanna Cullen. Equiano wrote his story down and named it From the Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano. Parks lived with her mother Leona McCauley and her father James McCauley. Sojourner Truth, not content to remain in one place for any length of time, resumed her travels and spoke in Ohio, Indiana, Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin. In Indiana, in the fall of 1858, Truth made another memorable gesture before an audience of both sexes, again related to gender. According to a report published in the abolitionist newspaper, the Boston Liberator, and republished in the second edition of Truth’s Narrative, after a hostile minister claimed that she was a man:   In vindication of her truthfulness, she told them that she would show her breast to the whole congregation; that it was not to her shame that she uncovered her breast before them, but to their shame. Her words were even more poignant since the war broke out in 1861. Although in her 60’s, Sojourner displayed the energy and determination that was inherent in her character when she visited and said words of encouragement to the black troops stationed at Detroit.
Isabella Baumfree, otherwise known as Sojourner Truth, was born to James and Elizabeth Baumfree as a slave around 1797 in Ulster County, New York. She was a slave of a Dutch family, the Hardenberghs, but once her owner died, she was sold at an auction for the first time to a Englishman, John Neely. Since she could only speak Dutch while Neely spoke English, it was difficult for them to communicate and as a result, Neely would constantly beat her brutally. She had suffered as a slave such as being spit on, threatened, and beaten aggressively to the point that she had scars on her body, blood trickling down from her body, and many wounds.
Sojourner Truth was a born slave named Isabella, delivered her speech at a woman’s convention in Ohio in 1851. Women’s rights were a big issue but Black Women’s rights were in worse condition. She stood for feminism, racial equality and religion. She supported freedmen and corner preached about Evangelism after she understood the bible and Christianity more.

Southern states, however, maintained their original work, continuing the previous circular agricultural system. This suited the firm economic foundation of United States government. However, even continuing economic growth, some Americans still recognized moral rights. The moving disagreement era, America’s Antebellum period grew a deep internal struggle within the American society’s families. “Abolitionists, anti-racial discrimination groups, demanded an end to dehumanized labor treatment in the Southern states” (James 94). However, during this time, women discrimination was also another hot topic taking place. These movements pursued, and women joined numerous groups, and became more society perceived, standing with the thousands African-Americans, immigration workers, and women’s rights, demanding their societal rights. Sojourner Truth is an American legend. She began life as a slave and ended her life as an outgoing speaker and free woman. Sojourner led a very disadvantage life but was able to rise above her hardships. Truth was a motivational speaker even though she was not able to read or write. Sojourner Truth continues to impact lives today through her works.

Growing up during slavery times were hard on African American’s. Being treated the way they were they were treated was an injustice and something no one should ever go through. By analyzing Sojourner Truth’s early life of being born a slave, becoming a mother, having at least three of her children sold away from her, heading to freedom, fighting for abolition and women’s rights, advocacy during the civil war, her death and her legacy which lives on today. It is clear that Sojourner truth shaped her time.
Throughout Sojourner Truths speech she makes several claims about stereotypes, motherhood, hard work, and her relationships with white men and women. By stating she's got robbed of the opportunity to become a mother shows how unfair life in the early 1800's was for women but more importantly African-American females. His life was more than a fight against segregation, it was segregation. He lived it and overcame it to not only better himself but to prove it could be done and to better his fellow man.
Harriet Jacob had spent seven years in hiding in hopes to make it to the northern states to be free. She finally achieved it when the Dr. Flint had died and way followed by his daughter’s husband in Boston to have her buy her freedom. I have heard her say she would go to the ends of the earth, rather than pay any man or woman for her freedom, because she thinks she has a right to it. Besides, she couldn't do it, if she would, for she has spent her earnings to educate her children."(Incidents, pg. 180). She would never give up and there was no way that she would give in and pay for her own freedom. She had devoted her life to raising her children and educating them. While Sojourner Truth continued to persuaded people about the women’s rights. These women worked to get the truth out about the treatment they had received while in slavery. Encountering the women's rights movement in 1850, Truth added its causes to hers. She is particularly remembered for the famous "Ain't I a Woman?" speech she gave at the woman's rights convention in 1851. Although Truth never learned to read or write, she dictated her memoirs to Olive Gilbert and they were published in 1850s as The Narrative of Sojourner Truth: A Northern Slave. This book, and her presence as a speaker, made her a sought-after figure on the anti-slavery woman's rights lecture circuit.
Isabella was one of the most influential and courageous slaves born and known in the United States. Many do not know her by her birth name, but rather as her freed name of “Sojourner Truth”. Truth was a significant figure in human rights, such as women’s suffrage, and the abolishment of slavery during the 19th century in America. Her actions could be seen as one of the best attempts by an ex-slave at breaking the grip of oppression over slaves and women. Truth’s importance to American history is ground breaking and with her background of being a slave and as an oppressed woman, only intensified her involvement and lead to some surprising, yet successful attempts. Although only the good outcomes are mentioned, Sojourner faced numerous hardships from difficult confrontations of activists to disgust from the observers.
