The Socs and the Greasers are gangs who causes some trouble.
The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. Ponyboy and Darry are Greasers and they don’t want to get in trouble. The Socs tried to kill Ponyboy with a knife. Cherry was a Soc and became friends with the Greasers. The Socs causes more trouble than the Greasers.
Darry does not want Ponyboy to get in trouble with the police. Even though some of the greasers steal and get in fights, Ponyboy says that Darry, his brother, would kill him if he got in trouble with the police. Some greasers have their own rules. “Darrell would kill me if I got into trouble with the police. Since Mom and Dad were killed in an auto wreck, the three of us get to stay together only as long as we behave.” Ponyboy and his brothers will stay together only if Ponyboy does not get in trouble by the police. Dally robbed a store and he tried to run away from the police then they shot him. Ponyboy does not want to get in trouble, however the Socs don’t care if they cause trouble.

This fiction book focused on Ponyboy’s life and the problems he ran into with the Socs. He and his gang of friends had fights with the Socs that happened often, and had to deal with a Soc being killed by one of the Greasers, though it was an act of self defense. One night Pony and his best friend Johnny are attacked by a group of drunken Socs. When one of the Socs tries to drown Pony, he goes unconscious and when he wakes up, he sees that Johnny has killed one of the Socs. The two boys decide to go to their friend Dally; he gives them money and directions to a church in the country. There they hide out for a long week, and after it Dally comes to find them. After eating, they return to the church and see that it has caught fire. A group of children are stuck in the burning building. Pony and Johnny do not hesitate and jump in to save the children, Pony gets out ok but Johnny is hit with a piece of falling wood and serious burnt. The boys appear in the news as heroes, even though they are still wanted for murdering the Soc. Pony is fine, but Johnny is badly hurt. After a while, there is a big fight between the Greasers and the Socs. The Greasers win, but when Dally and Pony go to tell Johnny that they won, he dies during their visit. Dally is destroyed by this and later he calls Pony to tell him that he robbed a store and is being chased by the cops. They hurry to meet him, and see him shot down after he pulls a gun on the police. Pony is scared by what has happened, and convinces himself that he, not Johnny, killed the Soc.

Ponyboy was walking home from the movies minding his own business and then a group of Socs saw him shouted “Greaser” and confronted him. “Wanna haircut Greaser?” one of the Socs said. Ponyboy was just minding his own business and then some Socs decide to run up on him. They started threatening him, punching, kicking, spitting, and cursing at him. The Socs preceded with beating Ponyboy up. Ponyboy didn’t know what to do so he was screaming for help because his house is only a couple blocks away. His brothers showed up and started a dead run for the Socs, but the Socs jumped in their corvair and drove off. While Ponyboys brothers started running after the car jumping, kicking, and hitting it. The Socs threaten Ponyboy for absolutely no reason what so ever except for the fact that he’s a Greaser.

Greasers are expected to be bad people that are rude because of Greaser reputations. The Greasers are always being watched to see if they do anything wrong. Greasers are expected to do wrong by the the public. “On the front page of the second section was the headline: Juvenile Delinquents Turn Heroes.”(107). This shows that even though Ponyboy and Johnny saved those kids, they were expected to be Juvenile delinquents because they are Greasers, even though the only thing Johnny ever did to be a juvenile delinquent is kill Bob and that was in self defence.

One character that stands out in the story is Ponyboy because he is dynamic with many sides to his personality, and he is the protagonist of the story. Ponyboy can be described as sensitive, smart, and brave.

A rival gang from the Socs crowd, a richer, more refined group, send him and his pals into a whirlwind of trouble and hurt. Greasers and socs are like the two sides of a town the greaser are the east and the socs are the west they are similar with a few differences . The greaser are the greasy long haired rugged side of the town . The socs are the rich fancy kids with mustangs . The socs and greasers at points have similarities like their treated poorly by their parent and by random people and that most of them have bad home lives and get in fights or sleep on the street. Sometimes the greasers can be deep down and emotional unlike the socs that are stone hearted . The main character in this book is a 14 year old boy named Ponyboy. He lives with his two older brothers, Darry and Sodapop, ever since his parents passed away. He and his brothers belong to a gang called the Greasers, who are from the wrong side of the railroad tracks. They all have long and "tuff" hair; their trademark is the amounts of oil that they put in their hair. They hate the Socs. The Socs have everything, they have great girls, great cars and they think they are superior so they always pick on the Greasers.

One of them stuffed Ponyboy’s face into the fountain and tried to drown him, so Johnny stabbed him before he killed Ponyboy. The boy that he stabbed died, and so they went to a friend who gave them money and a gun to run away with. They ran away to an abandoned church, and one day Dallas, the friend who gave them the supplies came by and took them out to lunch, and when they returned the church was one fire. Johnny and Pony saved the kids inside, and a piece of wood fell on Johnny and he broke his back. He died in the hospital a few days later, and Dallas couldn’t take it so he robbed a grocery store and took out an unloaded gun when the police came, so they shot and killed him. Exposition: The gang is introduced and the rivalry between the Greasers and the Socs is shown. Complication: Johnny kills the Soc that almost drowned Ponyboy, and they must leave town Climax: Pony and Johnny go into the burning church to save the children that are inside; Dallas dies. Resolution: Everything goes back to normal, and Pony decides to write about his journey for his English essay.
Typically, greasers are depicted as people similar to hoods, as Ponyboy states, "Greasers are almost like hoods; we steal things and drive old souped-up cars and hold up gas stations and have a gang fight once in a while" (Hinton 4). Yet, even though Ponyboy is a greaser, he avoids getting into trouble for the sake of staying together with his family. He explains that, "I don't mean I do things like that... Since Mom and Dad were killed in an auto wreck, the three of us get to stay together only as long as we behave. So Soda and I stay out of trouble as much as we can, and we're careful not to get caught when we can't" (Hinton 4). Alternatively, Pony also enjoys activities such as reading and watching movies. Even simpler things, such as sunsets and clouds, are something he found beauty and enjoyment in. This sets him apart from the greasers because according to Pony, he states that, "And nobody in our gang digs movies and books the way I do" (Hinton 3). Since nobody other than Ponyboy himself shares the enjoyment of these particular pastimes, which is drastically different from pursuits such as shoplifting and fighting in rumbles, Ponyboy is divergent from the standard attributes of the greasers.
