MSW Letter of Intent Understanding of the Social Work Profession To understand the social work profession an individual should know and conduct him/herself according to the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Code of Ethics. The professional conduct of social workers are governed by the code in the day-to-day activities with clients and colleagues. It provides the profession with a set of ethical principles and core values that are embedded in a social worker. The code is a guide for the profession in order to make ethical decisions. The profession is the advocate for those in need who either cannot or will not be seen or heard by those in power and/or authority. Social workers are the voice of individuals, groups, communities, and/or organizations that will help empower them to have a voice. Where there is injustice, social workers pursue justice. The Social Work profession aids diverse populations that are subject to oppression, vulnerability, and/or live in poverty. Career Goals Why does the profession of social work interest to me? On a daily basis, I participate with co-workers helping others which help me prepare for social work practice. I work in a hospital with the Care Management Department as a Special Services Coordinator. My role enables me to work alongside the director of care management, transitional navigators (nurses), social workers, and utilization managers.
