At our local Women's Employment Centre (WERC) a small group of women, including myself, meet every Tuesday morning for a Women Studies course. We study women past and present, and other affairs that are relevant to our modern-day lives. Such as, racism, economics, politics, family, ways to economize our households, etc. The goal in all this is to be better prepared to fulfill our roles in the community and reach our potential.

Our local women's centre offers an 8 week course to help women build basic skills for entering and overcoming particular barriers to employment. Seeing a need for more education and growth, a local teacher, Therese*, decided to start the Women's Studies course, “as an extension of the WERC's 8 week Employment Skills course . I saw a need for the women to continue to have support regarding life skills, women's issues, and the investment in life long learning. Students come and go as determined by their needs, but the class has on average 4-6 students.”

It isn't like a formal class where Therese* lectures us, then assigns homework. We learn mostly through discussion. We share our opinions, advise each other what books to read, we even take part in setting the curriculum to suit our particular needs. During a discussion about healthy eating and affordability, one of our fellow learners decided to lead us in a project helping other women, with limited means, access healthy foods. Vivian*, a single mother, not only shared her knowledge on gardening, but also how to cut costs by doing things like saving the bottoms of our celery, so we can grow new celery out of them. Her brainchild was to write to companies, convincing them to donate to our cause. As well she rallied the other women in the class to help her pot vegetables seeds for women to take home and start
