Social norms are patterns of behavior within society that are expected of certain groups. Society has engrained within its practices behaviors which are considered expected by groups of people that belong to it. Norm Violations thus are defined as the violation of expected behaviors. Within norm violations, there are three types of violations that occur. (Henslin) The first, is a violation against a folkway. Folkways are patterns of behaviors that are expected of a person within society, but are not strictly enforced. (Henslin) Hence this would not result in negative consequences that are too strict. The type of social norm which was violated a more. The social norm that was violated when visited occurred at a wedding between my cousin and his fiancée. The wedding had most of the family members happy, including another cousin (man) who was there with his boyfriend. When the two men engaged in kissing, this resulted in a lot of whispering which was condescending towards the two of them. The reason this social norm was particular was because of the environment as well as the type of culture existent in Mexico. Mexico has a male associated norm of chauvinism that associates masculinity with sexual appetite and the behavior of males. It is expected of males to behave in a more traditional perspective in which men like women and men behave with more aggression than women do. The social norm violated had a different reaction than the one that would be expected here in The United States. Although the same sentiment exists within the US, more leniency has been given towards the gay community over time than Mexico. It is now socially accepted in some states of the US to belong to the LGBT community. As where in Michoacán, within the particular small ranch community that this occurred, the reaction out of most people was to engage in silent mockery within some of family members with Spanish words such as “puto” and “maricon” (variations of derogatory terms towards homosexual men).
