Social media has begun to take the world by storm through dozens of mobile apps that are changing the way people communicate. All social media sites have millions of members who are allowed to share photos and message others on a regular basis. Although all generations have become more accustomed to the use of social media, the younger generations are the most fanatic users of these sites. As social media became developed, its main purpose was to promote and aid communication; however, it may be doing more harm than good. Since social media is always available to anyone at any time, it can lead to serious consequences, including losing your job. Social media sites give employers a glimpse of their job candidate 's life outside of his or her interview. Many employers choose not to hire that person due to something they have found on his or her social media page. Business managers want an employee who will present a strong image for the company. Arguably, social media shows a person’s true colors in regard to how that person acts, so it is no wonder employers are tuning in. Andrew Santella, editor of Elmhurst College’s Prospect Magazine, states, “ Social networks depend on the belief that we all have a story to tell, we all have pictures to show and the world wants to hear from us” (47). Most of the time when people post online, they are trying to brag to their followers about how they had an awesome night. People seem to believe that everyone is so interested in their lives that they constantly have to post. If someone takes a picture of a job applicant holding a beer at his or her sister’s 21st birthday party and posts it on a social media site, it will be there for anyone to see at any time. All an employer needs to do is google that person’s name and the employer can see that picture and most likely will not offer that person the job.
