Book Title: Social Entrepreneurship edited by: Johanna Mair, Jeffrey Robinson and Kai Hockerts
A. Introduction
The book that I read was all about the extensive study of social entrepreneurship which the authors described as a global phenomenon that would help solve social problems. There are a number of people who contributed in producing this book, 16 to be exact. All of them have different educational background on business. The contributors are James Austin, Albert Cho, Ann Clifford, Geoffrey Desa, Sarah E.A. Dixon, Kate Ganly, Helen Haugh, Kai Hockerts, Suresh Kotha, Johanna Mair, Ignasi Marti, Ernesto Noboa, Francesco Perrini, Jeffrey Robinson, Christian Seelos, and Clodia Vurro. They introduced the book

I have learned different definitions of social entrepreneurship which extended my knowledge about this particular field. I have gained a wider understanding of social ventures which includes its purpose and who it should be for or its main objective which is to improve people’s lives and give livelihood to those who are underserved. I have come to realize that we should pay attention to this field, which was described as an emerging field, because it impacts the world in good way. Most, if not all, entrepreneurs should start getting involved in this field because they are not only creating profit but they are also able to help those unfortunate people to have a better way of living. I have learned that social entrepreneurs should be innovative and should think of how they can create value and impact to the society. I have learned that social entrepreneurs should find what is not working and think of possible solutions. They should be able to spread the solution they have thought of, change the system and try to encourage the society to make a difference—to change for the better. I have realized that everyone has the capability to put up a social enterprise or venture if they really want to make a change. In simple ways, everyone may be able to help one another, especially those who are under privileged or underserved. I have learned that everyone should be given a chance to work and live a better life. We need to set aside personal gain if we truly want to achieve our social business goals. I also learned that all the existing research about social entrepreneurship is still lacking and further research is still needed for people to understand it better. People should be able to have a better understanding about social entrepreneurship for them to be able to implement it well and properly. Making more research about this field may encourage more people to be involved in this
... their money to turn a profit. Being an entrepreneur and starting a business does not mean that the person knows what they are doing, and most of the time they are just defending their ideas until they ultimately fail. They spend most of their time in the business and not on the business, and in return if they do not realize this they will fail as well. By being an entrepreneur, it can be easy if you follow all the guidelines listed in this book, and there will be success in any business which has been started. For some entrepreneurs their minds are consumed by their ideas, without wanting to listen to others, failure will be in the imminent future. Therefore after reading this book it is evident that an entrepreneur must follow these concepts and processes in order to overcome this problem among entrepreneurs in society, and by doing so they will achieve success.
company should be, which the answer is to make money. The book is about transforming
I would love to apply the lessons I am learning from the book and the class to every domain that interest me. What feels contradictory to me is that the book shows that to be a successful entrepreneur, one need to think twice and coldly calculate all his/her interaction which is the opposite of what I want to do with my family and the people around me. Going even further, it proves how hard it must to work with friends and/or family
Many things have changed from the 1950s, including entrepreneurship. Technology has made the option of becoming an entrepreneur accessible to almost anyone. However, we are beginning to see a decline in entrepreneurs in the United States, this is due to large companies who seem to be spreading all over the United States and into other countries like a wildfire. The big start to entrepreneurs becoming popular was after World War two when Americans were no longer worrying about the future and instead could see something better. That is why entrepreneurship took off in the 1950’s, it had progressed for many years creating new jobs and opportunities but recently we have come to a drop in opportunities for people seeking to be entrepreneurs.
Next time when I pick up a book, I will try to judge it by the cover. I that the book was great. I definitely encourage others to read it. Everyone could benefit from reading it, whether they want to start their own business or not. This book teaches about self-confidence, work ethic, and
Entrepreneurship has always been an increasingly task but never an impossible one, especially if you have ethical values and the right attitude.
When we were given the opportunity to review a book that related to our entrepreneurship class I had one goal in mind, I wanted to find an author that was not the typical writer. I did not want a sixty-five year old professor who would give me dry explanations about theories and business models that I had covered in class. Frans Johansson was raised in Sweden and received his bachelor’s in Environmental Science then earned his MBA. Johansson was just what I had been searching for, someone who was applying concepts in ways that would help me throughout my own career.
A social enterprise is an entrepreneurial, non-profit project that generates revenues and serves a social cause. It is a social value-creating activity implemented through innovative and resourceful approaches. Social entrepreneurs seek to create social value because they have identified a problem in society that they want to solve. Social entrepreneurs are risk takers. They are willing to take reasonable risk on behalf of the people the organization aims to serve. They understand that new opportunities arise in the changes in the government and the industry. The social and financial return of their investments are always weighed so that they true to their social mission. Social entrepreneurs have
For example, a company may believe that they have social responsibility to provide organic products to consumers, which will impact the cost to make the product and the funds needed for the company’s sustainability. This could lead to issue number one, “will consumers pay a “CSR premium for a product?” (Werther, Chandler 2001, p. 190). The second issue that is presented as it relates to social entrepreneurship is: how can a company continue with their mission and operating practices once the founder is no longer there or ownership in taken by a leader whose motivation is profit specific vs. social
Government support for social economy entities is recognized in European Union, Brazil and Argentina. While in countries of Africa and Asia support is built by the citizens forums and networks on sustainable development and by United Nations agencies. I would begin by offering solutions in my field before reaching out to problems outside my proverbial ‘box’. I am working on developing an online lab management platform. Initially it would be offered as an app enabling researchers to manage lab inventory and consolidate ordering. Gradually, the platform will transition into a cloud-based service with new bioinformatics tools to make record keeping, analyzing and sharing of the data more streamlined. Once I have sharpened my skills and built a multi-disciplinary network through these experiences, my social venture will begin - a company that would aim to improve the living conditions of suburban-rural areas surrounding my city Kolkata, India. In the beginning, the company would focus on agricultural development by creating end-to-end recycling systems collecting reusable water for agriculture and on environmental sustainability by providing an economic incentive to individuals to recycle reusable materials and offering cheaper recycled goods to local establishments. If successful, the company would venture into developing solutions for other social problems by implementing a similar philosophy of integrating social and commercial
These endeavors are controlled by shareholders either givers or poor people, and givers recover their underlying speculation, however any extra benefits made by the undertaking are furrowed once again into the work. To show his concept of a social business, Muhammad Yunus weaves through the book the intriguing contextual analysis of Grameen Danone, a joint endeavor amongst Grameen and the French multinational sustenance item organization Danone. Muhammad Yunus sees numerous sources from which these new social organizations can start: existing organizations, establishments, the World Bank and different offices, government improvement reserves, fruitful business people searching for a next movement, well off retirees, and late school graduates. In fact, these sources hold guarantee. Muhammad Yunus likewise trusts that social organizations would urge more individuals to give back: Many would discover building up and working in a social business more appealing than working for a philanthropy, given the renowned society agrees business people well beyond their money related achievement. Muhammad Yunus addresses the handy obstacles of making social organizations by compactly depicting the strides that must be taken if social organizations are to end up standard foundations. Advocates must build up an arrangement of lawful meanings of social business, alongside tax assessment and administrative principles. Social business benchmarks should then be set up and ensured. Muhammad Yunus trusts that distinctive sorts of autonomous accreditation and appraisals organizations will spring up to meet the requests of potential financial specialists and shoppers. I would include that legislature, guaranteeing offices, and the sheets of
