Social Emotional Learning in Education Social emotional learning is very important in today’s diverse classroom settings. With the world of education always changing it is now more important than ever to teach students about their social emotional learning. In this essay I will discuss the need for social emotional learning because of the increase of students coming from a diverse background. I will also discuss the importance of social emotional learning counter acting the negative influences of the increase of use of technology in today’s classrooms. This means that the field of education is working on integrating technology in the classroom. In the classroom teachers are using smartboards, ipads, google Chromebook, etc… This increase of the use of technology can have a negative effect on the students. One thing that I see in students is that when they are exposed to technology they can become addicted and this leads to students consistently always looking down and missing many social interactions. To be honest I was addicted to my phone and I caught myself always looking down. So when I was 25 (two years ago) I went without a phone for one full year. What I noticed was that I enjoyed life more and was able to make more meaningful memories with the people around me. By teachers teaching SEL they are providing the building blocks of a child’s social life and without being taught the social tools kids are going to miss out on a lot of what this world could offer them.
