Psychological and Social Ecology Theories: The Tyrone Howard Case

The case I will be using is about a man named Tyrone Howard who has allegedly shot at a police officer named Randolph Holder. According to the article Howard was already being pursued by officials in another shooting that took place in September. He had been trying to avoid officers during this time until he had crossed paths with Holder and Wallace, another officer with him, and at this point shot Holder. The theories I will be using are psychological and social ecology. The models I am using will be the medical and social. Howard had been released and put into a diversion program from another case however, many did not agree with this decision because Howard had a long criminal record since the age of 13. Howard was placed into a drug treatment program in another case as part of his plea. The Judge, Edward McLaughlin, claims that the DA never mentioned Howard's past records. McLaughlin “was persuaded to refer the case to a team dedicated to screening candidates for drug treatment, a decision another judge approved, since Howard had no convictions for violent offenses and after reading a social worker's report detailing Howard's troubled home life and longtime addiction to PCP”. Although this theory is weak when it comes to explaining outside influences like the environment unlike the social ecology theory. Social ecology theory focuses on the environment and puts blame on that instead of the criminals themselves. The medical model focuses on treatment of individuals while the social model tries to find solutions to the environment the community lives in. It focuses on a macro level and not a micro like the medical model does. This can be the same for the psychological theory, micro, and the social ecology theory which would also be
