There are many types of development theories, Psychoanalytic theories, Cognitive theories, Behavioral and social cognitive theories, ethological theories and ecological theories. Development is how a person changes throughout their life, from the time they are conceived to the time they die. Everyone processes and interprets things and information differently. After researching these various developmental theories ecological theories best describe development. Urie Bronfenbrenner is the researcher that created the ecological theory. Psychoanalytic theories least describe development. Both Ecological and Psychoanalytic theories have certain aspects that I personally believe to make a valid point and certain aspects that do not make a valid point when it comes to development. Eclectic theoretical orientation takes pieces of each theory that makes the most sense when it comes to lifespan development and follows that system. Ecological theories are everyone and everything having an impact on a child’s development, even if those people and events have no direct contact with the child. Psychoanalytic theories are based on the unconscious mind. Sigmund Freud was a psychoanalytic theorist and he believed that development is sexually based. He broke down development into 5 stages, oral, anal, phallic, latency and genital. He believed that an18 month to three year old’s development was centered on the anus. A child’s developed behavior was explained from when and how they were potty trained. If a child didn’t overcome a certain stage then they were stuck with certain developmental problems within that stage. Te first theory is Constructivism. Constructivism is known that human are meaning makers. We are not neutral with respect to the world. We actively interpret the world and make meaning of something. By interpreting images to mean something we compel and impose its meaningful use. As humans we look at three cause such a physical causes, psychological causes and spirtual cuases. The second thoery is on Development. While we evolve in mental complexity through out lives we have adaptive balances or stages of mental complexity. Starting at infacy to late adulthood. There are six order of conciousness which are zero to five. We will be discussing only he stages two through four. We make meaning different depending of which order of conciousness we are in. The two places of grow are slow or very slow. One will never move backwards. The last thoery is Holding Enviroment which consist of three components. The three components are confirmation,contradiction and continuty. Confirmation is described as holding on, support and encourgement. It appeals to our yearning for belonging. Contradiction is described as letting go, challenege and setting limits. It appeals to our yearning for agency,acheivement and autonomy. Continuty is described as staying out, remaining in place and being there. It appeals to our need for stability and predictability. As I was reading the three theories I found out the following most compelling main of points of their theories. Jean Piaget developed the Theory of Cognitive Development with has four stages, sensimotor stage in the infant years, pre-operational stage that manifests during the toddler and early childhood years, concrete stage during the elementary and part of the adolescents years and the formal operational state during adolescence into adulthood (Huitt & Hummel, 2003). Lev Semenovich Vygostky developed the Theory of Social Development. The zones of proximal development are between the ability of the child’s ability to solve problems on his/her own and the capacity to solve them with assistant (Shultz, 2014). Erik Erickson states that we develop through predetermined unfolding of personalities in eight stages (Boeree, 2006).
Mental illness is a disease that cannot be fully cured but controlled to some degree. There are multiple types of mental illnesses, ranging from mood disorders to schizophrenia. A mental illness is when there is an abnormality in the brain. An example would be when a person is diagnosed with depression; there is a lack of serotonin in the brain. Medications can balance the levels of serotonin, and either cure the depression or decrease the symptoms of depression. Mental illness is fairly common; 1 in 4 people are diagnosed with mental illness. Today there are multiple ways to diagnose a person with a mental illness. Through case study, the psychodynamic approach was developed by Sigmund Freud. Freud visited Charcot’s, a laboratory in Paris investigating people suffering from hysteria. There, Freud began patient case studies (Crain, p. 254). Freud developed 5 stages of human development known as the Oral, Anal, Phallic, Latency and Genital stages. The Oral stage is from the ages of birth to 18 months. This stage engages in oral activities such as sucking. Next the Anal stage begins around age 18 months to 3 years of age. Freud suggests that during the Anal stage a child focuses on the pleasure of purging from the rectal area. The Phallic stages, none as the masturbation stage, when a child get’s pleasure from focusing on his genital areas usually happens during ages 3 years to 6 years of age. After the Phallic stage come the Latency stages. Latency is when children at the ages of 6 to 12 years old work to develop cognitive and interpersonal skills suppressing sexual interests but those 12 years and older fall into the Genital stages. During the Genital stage those suppressed sexual interests re-occur and the need to find gratification dependent on finding a partner (Craig & Dunn, p 12)

I have to agree with Erikson’s theory of development. Though he does have many of Freud’s theories integrated within his own, he further develops Freud’s theories. I do believe that development does not stop at five years old but further develops throughout a person’s life and that it is influenced by his or her experiences and other extrinsic factors. I think that we are constantly experiencing different obstacles, and the strength of our ego from past experiences helps us in overcoming those obstacles.
The psychoanalytic perspective grew out of subsequent psychoanalytic theories (1901, 1924, and 1940) following decades of interactions with clients with the use of an innovative procedure developed by Sigmund Freud that required lengthy verbal interactions with patients during which Freud probed deep into their lives. In a nutshell, the psychoanalytic perspective looked to explain personality, motivation, and psychological disorders by focussing on the influence of early childhood experiences, on unconscious motives and conflicts, and on the methods people use to cope with their sexual and aggressive urges. The Biological perspective on the other hand looks at the physiological bases of behaviour in humans and animals. It proposes that an organism’s functioning can be described in terms of the bodily structures and biochemical processes that cause behaviour. This paper attempts to examine the similarities and differences between the psychoanalytic perspective and the biological perspective with the key focus on the core assumptions and features of these perspectives as well as their individual strengths and weaknesses.
Psychosocial development throughout the Life Cycle theory (sometimes known as individual development theory) proposes that each individual has the ability to master their environment at all stages of life (Coady & Lehman, 2008; Hutchison, 2008). The theory had its beginnings in Freud’s psychosexual stages of child development; however Erikson is responsible for laying the groundwork for the theory as it is known today, by proposing an epigenetic model of human development (Hutchison, 2008).
One that I agree with is, the psychosocial development theory. This particular theory was created by Erik Erikson. Erikson’s theory states that the development of the personality takes place all throughout life. Furthermore, Erikson believes that our interactions with others is is what affects our sense of self. Erikson’s theory includes eight stages that we all experience at certain parts of our lives. Each of the stages include an “either” “or” situation. For example, Industry vs. inferiority, which means 6-12 year olds either develop pride and accomplishment, or they feel inferior and inadequate. I agree with this theory because I do believe that people experience these stage in life. I also believe that the stages included in this theory build upon each other. Sigmund Freud developed the psychosexual stages of development to describe the chronological process of development that took place from birth through later adulthood. The stages of psychosexual are oral, anal, phallic, latency and genital. Freud developed that as children grow they progress from self-pleasing sexual activity to reproductive activity. Through this developmental process one will develop adult personality. Freud put much emphasis on sexual context of how ones libido, which is one sexual desires played a role in each stage of development. Freud emphasizes that individuals will strive to obtain pleasures in each stage of development, which becomes the basis of ones personality.
Developmental psychology is an area of research dedicated to the understanding of child-development. Throughout history many theories have been used to attempt to explain the complex process. Two of those theorists, Freud and Erikson, were instrumental in creating a foundation for child-psychology to build on. From a Freudian perspective, human development is centered on psychosexual theory. Psychosexual theory indicates that maturation of the sex drives underlies stages of personality development. Alternatively, Erikson is considered a neo-freudian scholar who developed psychosocial theory. In Erikson models there are eight major conflicts that occur during the course of an individual’s life.
The theory that has always interest me is the cognitive theory, pioneered by Jean Piaget. It is a theory based on the idea that an individual 's thought processes and the way those processes affect the person 's understanding of the world. Piaget 's cognitive theory determines how this understanding, and expectations it creates, affects the individual 's attitude, beliefs, and behavior. His theory on Cognitive Development in a nutshell explains the way biology influences how children conceptualize and deal with tasks at different stages while growing up. Piaget 's theory focuses more on how children 's behavior changes as they grow and how the children interact with their environment.
Freud emphasizes on the life history of individuals. As a result, he created 3 parts of human personalities. The first one being Id which is the largest portion of the mind. This portion is unconscious which results in being present at birth. The next one is ego; this portion is conscious and begins to emerge in early infancy. Lastly is superego which is the conscience. This part begins to develop from ages three to six. Freud also explains the five psychosexual stages which are oral, anal, phallic, latency, and genital. “Psychoanalytic theory suggested that personality is mostly established by the age of five.” (Cherry, n.d.). All five psychosexual stages help establish a personality at a young age.
Personality is an individual’s characteristic pattern of feeling, thinking and acting. Psychodynamic theories of personality view human behavior as a dynamic interaction between the conscious mind and unconscious mind, including associated motives and conflicts (Myers & Dewall, pg# 572, 2015). These theories focus on the unconscious and the importance of childhood experiences. Psychodynamic theories are descended from Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalysis, which is his ideology of personality and the associated treatment techniques. Psychoanalysis attributes thoughts and actions to unconscious motives and conflicts. This theory also includes the techniques used in treating psychological disorders by seeking to expose and interpret unconscious tensions. He proposed that childhood sexuality and unconscious motivations influence personality. Freud’s historically significant psychoanalytic theory became part of the human cultural legacy.
For Freud, psychosexual theory occurred when personality arises, as it tries to resolve conflicts between unconscious sexual and aggressive impulses and the societal demands to suppress these impulses. In general, psychoanalytic theorists are permeated with notions of human development, and how the child changes during the course of his maturation in an explicit and implicit perspective.
