James Brennan Radin E-Band French Revolution Skeleton Essay The French Revolution started in 1789 and culminated in Napoleon declaring himself Emperor in 1804. The causes of the Revolution are many, but stemmed from economic hardships being suffered by the masses and resentment of privileges held by the top of society. The goals of the revolutionaries were liberty, equality, and fraternity. Robespierre latter added “justice”. From the 5th of September 1793 to the 28th of July 1794 France’s newly formed republic had a vast change in power in which radical revolutionaries, led by Robespierre and the Committee of Public Safety, took power and began a tyrannic reign. Before the Terror the prices of bread were at high prices and this led to public outrage and helped put the committee in power and in part led to the Terror. At the beginning of the Terror the committee set maximum food prices called the “Law of Maximum” which provided the peasants with public relief. It stated that the national convention “has deemed essential, and the maximum or highest price of which it has believed it should establish, are: fresh meat, salt meat and bacon,...” (*8888****). After the Terror, the public later protested for the radical policies that had been put in place a year earlier by the committee. One protester said on May 20, 1795: “Under Robespierre, blood ran and we had bread; today blood does not run and we don’t have any bread, and we ought to make some blood flow to get some.” (888) As the Terror progressed, the Committee gained power; however, by the end, they were annihilated.((((((()))))))) Before the Terror the Republic of France had to fight civil and foreign wars. The price of bread was also skyrocketing and unrest began to spread. At the beginning of the Terror The Convention created the Committee of Public Safety, a group of 12 men in an attempt to fix the problems in France. They only gained more and more power in the French government. The Mountain aso gained complete control of the assembly making it easier for the Committee to gain power.
